Golden coins turn a story into counting practice at Dolton: a small example of early learning made tangible. Little Otters Pre-School is the nursery provision within Dolton Church of England Primary School, a village school in North Devon with provision for two- and three-year-olds.
At the Ofsted inspection on 2 to 3 July 2024, early years provision was judged Outstanding. That judgement covers the school's early years provision; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Repeated practice gives the early years foundation stage its practical shape here. In July 2024, children revisited new skills through activities they enjoyed. The golden coins came from their reading and became props for counting and pretend shopping. Story and number work connected through something children could handle and use.
Reading also had a clear place in early learning. During that same month, early years children developed fluent, confident reading quickly. These findings concern early years as a whole, so they should not be read as an expectation that every nursery child will already be reading.
Dolton uses Alumnis C360 as its wider curriculum framework, bringing together character education, community, innovation and academic learning. The school aims to help children contribute to their communities as they learn. For the youngest children, the July 2024 findings offer a concrete picture of engagement: they sustained their attention and kept trying when learning became difficult.
Little Otters has a lead practitioner and an early years practitioner. Support for special educational needs and disabilities begins in the early years: in July 2024, needs were recognised early and teaching was adjusted so children could participate in the curriculum alongside their peers.
Across Dolton, teachers and teaching assistants tailor support around a child's My Plan or Education, Health and Care Plan. Additional help can take place in the classroom where possible, with small-group work another option. This gives families a way to discuss support around their child's particular needs rather than a single fixed model.
The school building is on one level, with step-free access, wheelchair-accessible doorways and accessible changing and toilet facilities. These are practical features for families considering mobility and personal care. Parents can meet the class teacher and SENDCo, contribute to learning reviews and discuss targets and next steps. The trust's Social Inclusion Team also listens to families and directs them towards support where appropriate.
Attending Little Otters does not guarantee a Reception place. A separate application is required through Devon County Council, rather than directly to the school. Families must use the normal Reception application process and meet its deadline, even when their child already attends the pre-school. Applications can be made through Devon's online admissions service.
Nursery applications go directly to Dolton. Families can arrange a school visit by calling 01805 804315 or emailing dolton.sch@alumnismat.org. This provides a direct enquiry route and an opportunity to discuss joining the provision.
