Nursery at Wheatfield Primary School and Nursery

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. At a Glance

A school-day timetable and learning through play give Wheatfield’s nursery its practical character. The nursery opened in September 2024 and provides places for two-, three- and four-year-olds at Wheatfield Primary School and Nursery in Winnersh. Its home is a building designed for children aged two to 11, placing the youngest children within the school setting.

Term-time attendance follows the school’s holidays. For families with older siblings, that shared calendar makes the nursery pattern easier to coordinate.

The Nursery Day

Children’s interests help shape the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines activities chosen by children with teaching led by adults, who plan around children’s interests and their next steps. Children can then use what they have been taught in their own play. There is room for choice as well as adult direction.

Seven connected areas organise the curriculum. Language, movement and emotional and social development sit alongside early literacy, mathematics, discovering the world and creative expression. In parent terms, learning includes listening and talking, handling tools, taking turns and exploring ideas. Stories and books support literacy, with adults developing language through play and responding to children’s interests.

Music has a named programme: weekly Charanga sessions form part of the school’s EYFS provision. Children also experiment with instruments during independent learning and devise their own songs, dances and role play. Pens, paints, paper and scissors are accessible for children to choose their materials and develop their creations.

Nursery children have also had artwork exhibited alongside Reception children’s work, including both individual and shared pieces. Chicks have provided another experience involving both groups. These are concrete examples of creative work and encounters with living things, rather than promises about a fixed weekly timetable.

Care and Support

The nursery lead holds Early Years Teacher Status, a PGCE specialising in Early Years and a Children’s Development and Learning degree. The nursery team includes an early years practitioner, a teaching assistant and a part-time assistant. That brings teaching and care roles together around the youngest children.

School lunch is charged separately, or children can bring a healthy packed lunch from home. Contact the school for current meal charges. Wheatfield asks families to keep nuts and foods containing nuts out of school, so packed-lunch planning needs to follow that restriction.

For additional needs, the school uses Pupil Outcome Plans, monitored by parents, the class teacher and the special needs coordinator. Its support arrangements include advice from speech therapists and educational psychologists. Families can contact the SEND team at send@wheatfieldschool.org, giving them a direct route for discussing inclusion.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, managed here by Wokingham Borough Council.

For the 2026/27 entry cycle, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That date has passed. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions, and follow the deadline for the relevant Reception entry year.

Practical Information

Opening hours are 8.50am to 3.20pm, Monday to Friday in term time. Attendance options include a full week or either half of the week: Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday until 10.50am, or Wednesday from 1.20pm with Thursday and Friday.

The 30-hour funded pattern runs Monday to Thursday from 8.50am to 3.20pm, finishing on Friday at 12.50pm. Paid provision includes a 32.5-hour full week and top-up sessions. These distinctions matter when matching attendance to working hours.

Wheatfield offers fully funded places with no hidden charges. The universal entitlement provides 15 weekly hours from the term after a child turns three; an additional 15 hours may be available to eligible working parents of three- and four-year-olds. Some two-year-olds qualify through Working Parent or FEET funding. Paid places are offered where children are too young for funding or do not qualify for the extended entitlement. Contact the school for current charges.

Uniform includes a branded cardigan or sweatshirt, a royal blue polo shirt and dark tracksuit bottoms or leggings, with grey school trousers or a skirt as alternatives. A school book bag is required. Label everything; footwear must suit climbing and play, and Crocs and flip-flops are excluded.
