At a Glance

A shared Foundation Stage room gives this nursery a physical connection to the next stage of school life. At St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Winsford, nursery children can join Reception children for free-flow activities, rather than having their learning space entirely separate. That makes familiar faces and shared experiences part of the nursery day.

This is part-time nursery education within a Catholic school. St Joseph's describes education as a partnership involving families, school and parish, with Christian values shaping its aims. For parents, the faith character belongs to the nursery's wider school setting as well as its name.

The Nursery Day

Play and exploration shape learning in the nursery classroom. Children learn through experiences intended to prompt curiosity, while the nursery teacher aims to build relationships with children and their families. The emphasis is on developing confidence alongside learning, rather than describing the nursery year solely as preparation for formal lessons.

The joined Foundation Stage area includes a bright, airy room used for shared free-flow activities. Nursery children spend time alongside older children and encounter teachers from other classes there. This gives the shared space a practical purpose: children become familiar with people beyond their own classroom through ordinary activity.

Across the school, PRIDE brings together enthusiasm, independence, respect, positivity and determination. St Joseph's uses these behaviours to express its expectations for learning and taking responsibility for the surroundings.

Care and Support

Settling starts with familiarity. Nursery drop-in sessions use the shared Foundation Stage room, giving children experience of the space before they begin attending. These sessions offer a concrete introduction to the environment in which they will later play and learn.

Early-years SEND support sits within a wider school team. There is an Early Years Lead, and an early-years teacher working towards the NPQSENCO qualification supports families and colleagues with special educational needs queries. Parents therefore have an early-years point of contact as well as the school's SENDCo.

School-wide support uses individual Pupil Profile targets, reviewed at least three times a year. Parents can raise concerns with staff and meet the SENDCo; they also contribute to setting and reviewing targets. For children receiving additional support, this makes the discussion about specific needs and progress.

Meals have a school-wide routine: children taking a school lunch choose from the menu during the morning. This gives them a say in their meal.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the relevant deadline.

The shared Foundation Stage room provides useful familiarity with Reception children and other teachers. That is a transition benefit in daily experience, not a promise of admission. Keep the two decisions separate: choosing nursery provision and applying for a school place.

Practical Information

The nursery operates on a part-time basis. Enquiries can be made through the school office on 01606 668790 or by emailing admin@stjosephs.cheshire.sch.uk. The school is on Woodford Lane, Winsford, CW7 2JS.

Families are encouraged to visit the school. Seeing the shared Foundation Stage space provides a useful focus for that visit, alongside discussing how the nursery's play-based approach fits your child.
