A snail, a storybook and the language of size give Oak View’s youngest children concrete things to investigate. Little Acorns and Acorn Pre-School sit within The Oak View Academy in Winsford, with early education extending to children aged two. This is nursery provision within a primary school, with its own named classes and nursery teaching roles.
The early years provision received a Good judgement at Ofsted’s inspection on 13 and 14 February 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery inspection. The nursery-specific findings give parents two useful points of reference: preparation for reading through sound activities, and routines that help children become more independent.
Stories provide starting points for practical learning. In May 2026, Little Acorns explored a Minibeasts topic through The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Slow Snail, and watched a live snail. Books and a real creature brought the topic together, giving children something to observe as well as something to discuss.
An April 2026 account of Little Acorns’ learning connected Goldilocks and the Three Bears with comparing objects by size. Children used mathematical vocabulary to describe those differences. That makes early maths tangible: a familiar story becomes a way to talk about objects and compare them. Acorn class has also explored Divali using artefacts, giving children physical objects to examine while learning about a celebration.
The early years foundation stage here includes the small steps that come before reading and greater independence. In February 2024, nursery children, including the two-year-olds, practised recognising sounds and rhyme. These activities prepared them for learning to read. The emphasis at this stage is on listening and noticing sound patterns, rather than treating nursery as formal reading lessons.
Clear routines supported children’s growing independence in the early years in February 2024. For parents, that is a useful part of the day’s learning: becoming more able to manage familiar routines matters alongside stories and number work.
The staffing structure includes nursery leadership on Mondays and Tuesdays, a nursery teacher and a Little Acorns teacher. The nursery teacher holds an Early Years teaching qualification with qualified teacher status. These are distinct teaching roles within the school’s team, giving the provision a nursery-specific staffing structure.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at The Oak View Academy. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
