A sensory garden, vegetable growing and two rooms for younger children give Avalon’s nursery a practical, playful character. This is the school’s own Nursery and Pre-School on Caldy Road in West Kirby, with Nursery for ages two to three and Pre-School for ages three to four. Both sit within the Early Years Centre, which combines the original nursery building with purpose-built accommodation.
There were 31 nursery children across two classes in November 2025. That is a dated roll, rather than a measure of available places. The distinction between the two age groups matters: younger children concentrate on play and social development, while Pre-School adds specialist activities and a gradual introduction to more formal learning.
Play provides the starting point. Younger children cook, make art, try practical science and explore movement through music. Activities become more structured as children develop, with attention to physical skills, relationships and managing feelings. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and care together; here, practitioners organise activities around early learning areas while allowing children to progress at their own pace.
The surroundings give that approach something concrete to work with. Two nursery rooms provide indoor accommodation, while a sheltered outdoor area and sensory garden extend exploration outside. Children grow vegetables in the organic garden and can use the hall/gym and computer areas. Pre-School adds drama and dance alongside Spanish and PE, giving older nursery children different ways to communicate and move.
The November 2025 ISI inspection found that early-years children developed independence, engaged with activities and progressed well. Its examples included singing rhymes to explore sounds, choosing books by voting and discussing their characters. Outdoors, children planted seeds and watered them; indoors, they made models in a construction corner. These are everyday opportunities to practise language, choice and practical responsibility.
Key workers track children’s development, and parents can speak with practitioners at either end of the day and look at their child’s work. Pre-School assessments are shared with families, with additional help arranged where learning becomes difficult. An EYFS SENDCo can be contacted through the school office, giving families a specific point of contact for additional needs.
Younger children commonly start with shorter sessions before increasing their attendance. Children are also offered time with their prospective class before joining, helping them become familiar with the setting. Lunch takes place in the school dining hall; the catering team prepares meals each day, using local ingredients where possible. Menu allergen information is accessible separately.
In November 2025, early-years staffing ratios were appropriate and practitioners had paediatric first-aid training, but school-level attendance policies, codes and non-electronic registers caused failures in leadership, welfare and safeguarding standards; the ISI monitoring visit on 5 June 2026 confirmed that all relevant standards examined were met. The routine visit also recommended more thorough evaluation of trip risk assessments after outings. Families should read that regulatory context alongside the early-years learning findings.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families need to apply separately for Reception: Avalon provides distinct registration forms for Nursery and Pre-School and for the main school. Use the main-school registration route when seeking Reception entry.
Familiarity is a separate benefit. In their final nursery year, children spend time with the Reception teacher, helping the next classroom feel less unfamiliar. Priority for certain funded nursery places is given to families planning to continue into Reception; that concerns nursery funding allocation and does not establish priority for Reception admission.
Four session choices are listed for 2026–2027: a full day from 8am to 6pm, a school day ending at 3.30pm after an 8am start, a morning from 8am to 1pm, or an afternoon from 1pm to 6pm. Nursery operates in term time. The minimum attendance is two sessions each week in Nursery and three in Pre-School, with each listed option counting as one session.
Universal funding covers 15 hours weekly for three- and four-year-olds from the term after their third birthday. Eligible working parents can seek limited funded places: 15 hours for two-year-olds or 30 hours for three- and four-year-olds. Waiting lists operate, and extended funding does not transfer automatically from the younger age group. Funded sessions carry additional charges for meals, snacks and specialist activities; hours beyond the funded allocation are charged separately. Non-funded session prices include lunch except for afternoons. Contact the Nursery Manager or School Business Manager about funding and current charges.
Request a visit through the Book A Tour form. Drop-off is to a practitioner at the Nursery/Pre-School entrance, with collection at the Nursery Entrance when the session finishes.
Nursery serves children aged two to three, and Pre-School serves those aged three to four.
