Nursery at Eastway Primary School

Stories, first sounds and support for the whole family give Eastway’s early years provision its character. Children can join full time after their second birthday, with Eastway Explorers and Nursery forming part of the school’s youngest provision in Moreton. The Early Years Unit and Family Centre support early education and families.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 19 and 20 October 2022. That is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Morning and afternoon sessions give the day a clear shape. Both Explorers and Nursery offer three-hour sessions, allowing families to choose a morning or afternoon pattern; extended hours are also offered. Full-time attendance is another option from after a child’s second birthday.
The named Eastway Matters Curriculum is designed for the youngest children. The early years foundation stage (EYFS) learning described in October 2022 combines building knowledge with early language and social development: Nursery children enjoyed stories and rhymes, began recognising initial sounds, and younger children started learning about healthy relationships. These are foundations for later learning as well as for playing together.
Activities were selected to build on children’s existing knowledge in the early years curriculum areas described in October 2022. Reading preparation was a clear strength. The wider school site includes sensory spaces, an orchard, a nature reserve and Forest School, giving the provision a setting with substantial outdoor features.
Nursery staffing comprises a class teacher who also leads early years, supported by a teaching assistant. Explorers has a room lead and early years assistants; the team’s responsibilities include sensory support and family engagement. Parents of Explorers children can speak with the team in the morning or after school, or email Earlyyears@eastway.wirral.sch.uk.
In October 2022, staff recognised additional needs in early years and arranged the support children required. Families can contact the SENDCO through the school office, providing a direct route for discussing concerns. The Family Centre also hosts Eastway Pantry, a social supermarket open to everyone, extending practical help beyond the classroom.
Attending Eastway’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through Wirral’s local authority school admissions team, following the normal application timetable. Nursery admissions are managed by Eastway’s governors, so the two applications follow different routes.
Preparation for the next stage is a separate matter. In October 2022, Nursery children’s work with rhymes, stories and initial sounds prepared them to begin phonics in Reception. That learning benefit should not be confused with an admissions entitlement.
Sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am or from 12.15pm to 3.15pm for both Explorers and Nursery. Additional hours can be booked at the start or end of the school day. Paid sessions and top-ups to funded places are offered; contact the school for current charges.
Eastway accepts 30-hour funding for eligible parents’ two-year-olds, an arrangement introduced in September 2025, and accepts 30-hour funding for three- and four-year-olds. Funding approval does not guarantee an early years place. Proof of funding is required once a place has been allocated.
