A pirate ship, a dedicated outdoor area and a teaching team of qualified teachers and teaching assistants give Great Meols’ Foundation 1 its own character. This is the school’s nursery class for children aged three and four, on Elwyn Road in Meols. The provision was refurbished in summer 2019, adding resources for children to use in their learning.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 15 and 16 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The strongest reason to consider Foundation 1 is the combination of purposeful teaching and space for physical play.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent language, that means developing children’s conversation, movement and relationships alongside early reading, number work, creativity and exploration of the world. The nursery’s approach recognises that children develop differently and that activities should respond to individual needs.
Books have a named place here. Through Super Six, the nursery aims to help children become familiar with a selection of books over the year. Nursery children also enjoy songs and rhymes, giving listening and language a practical place in their learning.
Outside, the Foundation Stage area, play equipment and pirate ship provide a physical counterpoint to those book experiences. Children have space and equipment for active play as well as resources within the refurbished provision.
In November 2023, early years teaching combined precise learning goals with skilled adult questioning and support. Children sustained their attention and kept trying with the activities provided. For parents, the useful distinction is that adults actively develop learning through their interactions with children.
Qualified teachers and teaching assistants run Foundation 1. Partnership with parents forms part of its EYFS approach, connecting children’s individual needs with the experiences adults provide.
Children in EYFS receive a fruit or vegetable snack through the Schools Fruit and Vegetable Government Scheme. Milk can be ordered through Cool Milk and is free for children under five. These arrangements put snack and drink provision into the everyday picture.
For additional needs, the school uses personalised support plans and works with families and external specialists. Parents can contact the special educational needs coordinator through the school office. All school staff receive child protection training, with concerns referred to the designated safeguarding lead.
Attending Foundation 1 does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Wirral Council’s admissions process, using the Wirral Authority Primary Preference online form by the published deadline. The local authority allocates places against its admission criteria. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Before children start school, parents are invited to meet teaching staff, and the school seeks to arrange an informal session for children. These pre-entry sessions help children become familiar with school; families must still apply separately for Reception.
