Nursery at Irby Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
An early start within a primary school shapes Irby's nursery: Foundation One welcomes children aged two, three and four, with one class accommodating a maximum of 29 children per session. This is the school's own nursery provision, on Coombe Road in Irby, Wirral. Children can join from age two and remain until they begin school.
The early years staffing structure has more adults relative to children than the older classes. For families, the important distinction is scale: the session limit applies to Nursery/Foundation One, rather than describing the capacity of the whole school.
Foundation One runs from 9am to 3:30pm. Early reading has a named starting point here: Phonics Bug begins in FS1. Children learn to recognise speech sounds and connect them with written letters, building the skills used in reading and writing. The school keeps phonics teaching brief and uses a sequence of recall, new learning and practice.
Picture books also feature in early years learning, alongside phonics. That gives children encounters with stories as well as work on sounds. Irby's school-wide learning aims include developing ideas through discovery and practice, with collaboration and expression among its guiding values.
Physical resources across the school include an outdoor classroom funded by Friends of Irby Primary School (FIPS). This is a school facility; it should be distinguished from a nursery-specific outdoor programme.
Food brings a clear daily routine. Children in EYFS receive fruit or vegetables each morning, and families are encouraged to send a refillable bottle labelled with their child's name. Irby is nut-free, so snacks brought from home must exclude nuts. Milk for pupils under five is free through Cool Milk, but registration is still required.
Edsential prepares the school lunches, using a menu that rotates over three weeks. Fresh fruit and salad accompany the lunch choices. These arrangements give families concrete food routines to plan around.
For concerns about special educational needs, the child's teacher is the first contact. Further observation or assessment may follow, with the SEND coordinator involved where appropriate. Parents can arrange a coordinator appointment through the office. Across the school, support includes individual plans and adjustments to teaching, with parents and outside specialists involved.
A school Sensory Room provides a quieter space, with soft lighting, sound and sensory activities intended to help children manage feelings and return to learning. Its role is distinct from the classroom.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application; nursery entry through the school office and allocation by the local authority are different processes.
For the September 2026 intake, parents used the online Wirral Authority Primary Preference application, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. Reception places are allocated by the local authority against its admission criteria, so families should treat the later application as a separate decision.
Applications for Nursery/Foundation One go directly to the school office, which can also arrange a visit. Contact 0151 648 2944 or schooloffice@irby.wirral.sch.uk. The nursery's 9am start and 3:30pm finish provide the main times around which to organise the day.
School communications use email and Arbor in-app messages. Checking both helps parents keep track of dates and updates alongside conversations with staff.
Foundation One welcomes two, three and four-year-olds, from age two until they begin school.
