Learning to manage feelings gives Ladymount’s early years provision its clearest character. Confidence, resilience and wellbeing are explicit curriculum priorities, placing children’s emotional development alongside their learning from the start.
Ladymount Pre-School belongs to Ladymount Catholic Primary School in Pensby. Its early years pages describe provision for ages two to five and a team led by teachers. Caterpillars and Butterflies are the names used for the nursery and Foundation 1 classes, giving the younger provision its own identity within the school.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the curriculum framework here. Ladymount describes experiences intended to help children understand their emotions and develop confidence. For parents, that means the curriculum’s stated purpose includes how children feel and respond, rather than focusing solely on what they learn.
Connections with the wider school feature in a parent testimonial: pre-school children have joined storytelling in the main hall, Remembrance activities and the nativity. These are examples of participation in school life, rather than a timetable for every child.
At the inspection on 11 and 12 June 2024, Ofsted graded early years provision Good and found children absorbed in their learning. There was also a material concern: some activities did not deliver the intended learning, leaving a few children less well prepared for key stage 1 than they could have been. Staff training was required to make delivery more consistent. Engagement and the learning purpose of an activity both matter here.
A child’s key person is a contact for parents raising concerns. The pre-school SENCO works with staff to recognise additional needs early, and parents help shape an individual support plan. This gives families a defined role in decisions about their child.
Where support within the setting is insufficient, referral to specialist services or the local authority follows discussion with parents and their consent. The process therefore includes both help within pre-school and a route to further support.
Communication and settling feature in family accounts. Testimonials describe photographs and observations shared through Tapestry; one parent recounts a child initially finding pre-school difficult before becoming more settled with staff support. These are individual experiences, rather than a prescribed settling programme.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate decision from choosing pre-school.
For children with additional needs, transition can include extra school visits and sharing helpful strategies with the receiving teacher or SENCO. The key person involves parents in that process. This helps children prepare for change. Reception admission remains a separate application.
Pre-school opening hours are 8:40am to 3:10pm, Monday to Friday. These provide the practical boundaries of the day when planning family routines.
The pre-school has its own contact form, telephone number, 0151 648 8005, and email address, preschool@ladymount.wirral.sch.uk. Its contact address is Ladymount Pre-School, 9 Portal Road, Pensby, Wirral, CH61 5YD.
