At a Glance

Foundation 1 is the starting point at Manor Primary School: nursery provision for children aged 3+, within the primary school on Beechwood Drive in Prenton. It gives families a school-based early-years option, with nursery applications handled directly by the school.

The school's overall Ofsted judgement is Requires Improvement. That is a whole-school judgement, rather than a separate nursery grade.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives the learning framework its breadth. Its seven areas cover language and communication, physical development, personal and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts. For parents, that means early learning encompasses conversation, movement and relationships alongside the beginnings of reading and number.

Playing and exploring, sustaining effort and developing ideas are the EYFS's three characteristics of learning. The emphasis is on how children learn as well as what they learn. These are framework principles, rather than a timetable of nursery activities.

Home learning can be equally practical: share stories, sing together, draw and paint, or explore shapes and numbers through play. Talking about a book's pictures turns reading together into a conversation. Families using more than one language can tell stories and sing in the language they feel confident using.

Care and Support

For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), Manor's early-years approach includes watching for emerging difficulties, listening to parents' concerns and reviewing development. The school plans support through an assess, plan, do, review cycle: understand the need, agree help, put it into practice and check its effect. Parents are informed when special educational provision begins.

A One-Page Profile records individual targets, adjustments and planned support. The SENCo and class teacher revisit it each term, giving families a regular opportunity to discuss whether the help needs to change. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher between formal meetings.

Across the school site, a ramp and double doors support access, alongside two lifts and two disabled toilets. Children with medical needs have an Individual Health Care Plan developed in consultation with parents, with health professionals involved where appropriate.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer admission priority. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority's normal admissions process; Wirral Council coordinates allocation for Manor. Nursery admission and Reception admission are distinct decisions. Plan for both.

For children with SEND moving between classes, information and targets pass to the next teacher in advance, usually with a planning meeting. Where a child has an EHC plan, preparation for a change of educational phase includes reviewing and amending it in time to arrange support. This supports continuity of care; it does not alter admission priority.

Practical Information

Apply directly to Manor using the nursery application form, obtainable through the school office or online. Families can also arrange a visit with the school before applying, providing an opportunity to meet the team.

The enquiry route is the school office: 0151 677 3152 or schooloffice@manor.wirral.sch.uk. The school is on Beechwood Drive, Prenton, CH43 7ZU.
