Nursery at Mersey Park Primary School

Three-hour sessions set the rhythm at Mersey Park’s Foundation Stage 1 nursery, with a packed-lunch break for children staying full time. This is the nursery provision within Mersey Park Primary School on Elm Road, Wirral. Children can start from the term following their third birthday, subject to space. Capacity is 52 part-time places or 26 full-time places, so the balance between session types matters for families planning their week.
Communication gives the curriculum a clear focus. The school prioritises vocabulary and language development, uses Early Learning Goals as milestones, and plans opportunities to return to earlier learning. For parents, that means the emphasis extends beyond encountering something new: children also have opportunities to practise and remember it.
Shared reading is part of the school’s curriculum approach, introducing knowledge and vocabulary together. Its principles also give children an active role through discovery, asking their own questions and creative work. The Mersey Park Mindset provides a named thread through this approach, connecting learning with aspirations and pride in achievement. These are the school’s curricular principles within which the nursery sits.
Children staying full time bring a packed lunch from home. The lunch period runs from 11:30am to 12:20pm, making food preparation part of the family’s daily routine rather than a school dinner booking.
Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) sits within the school’s provision. Teaching assistants support every class, with individual tuition or work in smaller groups offered where needed. The curriculum is adapted to children’s needs, and the school works with parents, external agencies and Wirral Local Authority. This gives families several routes into support rather than relying solely on classroom teaching.
For a private concern about a child, A Place to Talk provides a message form addressed to a senior staff member. Safeguarding arrangements include annual staff training and an EYFS lead teacher within the deputy safeguarding team, linking early years with the school’s wider child-protection structure.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year.
The school directs Reception applicants to Wirral’s online admissions route. Its instructions for September 2025 entry gave January 2025 as the deadline; that admissions cycle is now past. Treat the nursery application and the later Reception application as separate tasks.
Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoon sessions run from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. Provision operates during term time across 38 weeks. The school has aligned nursery timings with the school day to help families who also have older children attending.
The funding model provides 15 hours from the term after a child turns three. Eligible families can access the 30-hour offer, but those places are offered only if space remains after morning and afternoon allocations. For full-time attendance, the school supplements provision to 33 hours and 45 minutes weekly at no additional charge.
Applications go directly to the school office, using the Foundation Stage 1 form. Supporting documents include a birth certificate, address evidence and proof of funding eligibility where applicable; families using the 30-hour offer must also supply their funding code. Once a place is accepted, the school expects attendance for the complete term because funding is allocated termly. Enquiries can be made on 0151 647 8197 or by email to schooloffice@merseypark.wirral.sch.uk.
