A home corner, construction play and a shared outdoor space give Christ Church’s pre-school a distinct identity within the school. Children can join from their third birthday, with up to 24 children per session. The F1 classroom sits beside Reception, and staff work across the Early Years team: children have their own base while becoming familiar with school life.
Early years provision was graded Good at the Ofsted inspection on 16 and 17 May 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play shapes the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum combines activities guided by adults with choices led by children. Communication, physical development and social and emotional skills receive particular attention, alongside literacy, maths, understanding the world and creative expression. In parent terms, learning includes talking, moving, making things and getting along with others.
Children choose between creative stations, reading spaces, mark making, construction and small-world play. Adults join their play and observe their interests to plan subsequent activities and teaching. This gives children choices while keeping teaching responsive to how they learn. Outdoors, the shared learning area is accessible throughout the day, with regular Forest School sessions adding another setting for exploration. Pre-school children also have access to the swimming pool during the summer term.
Maths has a practical rhythm. NCETM resources inform the pre-school curriculum, with counting woven into routines such as tidying and snack time. The planned focus is understanding numbers to 5 and connecting a written numeral with a quantity, extending further when children are ready. In May 2023, nursery children benefited from carefully planned work on speech, vocabulary and number understanding. They also played and interacted successfully with adults and other children indoors and outside.
Settling sessions give families opportunities to bring children in before their start. In May 2023, nursery children settled promptly and became accustomed to daily expectations. The team includes pre-school teaching assistants and an apprentice; dedicated Early Years wraparound care is staffed by a Level 3 teaching assistant and a qualified play worker.
Tapestry lets parents see moments from the nursery day and contribute experiences from home. Staff are available for conversations at session boundaries, with opportunities during the year to discuss progress. The SENCO works in Early Years for part of the week, and pre-school families can also receive support from the Family Liaison. For children learning to use the toilet, staff agree a plan with parents; families supply nappies and associated care items where needed.
Snacks are available during both morning and afternoon sessions, with adults encouraging conversation and children serving themselves. Lunch can be a hot meal, a deli option or a packed lunch. Dietary requirements can be accommodated, and packed lunches must be nut free. Lunchtime supervision is chargeable even with a packed lunch; unused funded hours may cover that supervision, with meals charged separately under that arrangement.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. For 2026/27, children who have attended Christ Church pre-school for three terms or more receive sixth-category oversubscription priority, below the preceding care, faith and sibling categories. That is a conditional priority, not an assured place.
Families must apply separately through Wirral Local Authority’s Reception application route by 15 January in the year their child is due to start. Those applying under faith criteria must also return a supplementary form to school by that deadline.
Familiarity develops separately from admissions. Children share outdoor learning, playtimes and collective worship with Reception, helping them get to know staff, children and routines before any move.
Morning sessions run from 9am to noon; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Lunch extensions allow a 12.30pm morning finish or a noon afternoon start, while a full day runs from 9am to 3.30pm. CC4C provides pre-school care from 8am to 9am and 3.30pm to 5.30pm, with breakfast and tea options in the familiar classroom.
Provision is term time only. Universal funding provides 15 hours from the term after a child’s third birthday; eligible families may access 30 hours. Funded sessions are fixed for a full term, subject to space. Changes for the following term must be requested in writing with at least half a term’s notice; requests are subject to availability and the school’s written confirmation. Ask the school for current charges for additional sessions, lunches and CC4C.
Enquiries go to earlyyears@christchurch-moreton.wirral.sch.uk or 0151 677 5152; visits can be booked by telephone. Uniform includes a white polo, grey bottoms and a yellow, grey or black sweatshirt, with no branding requirement. Collection is from the pre-school entrance beside the front playground, with children released individually. Tell staff about any change of collecting adult.
Children can join from their third birthday. Funded entitlement begins from the following term.
Yes. The full-day session runs from 9am to 3.30pm, with separate pre-school CC4C sessions before and afterwards, subject to availability.
No. A separate application is required. For 2026/27, attendance for three terms or more gives sixth-category oversubscription priority, but does not guarantee admission.
Children can have a hot or deli school meal, or bring a nut-free packed lunch. Lunchtime care is chargeable; unused funded hours may cover supervision, with school meals charged separately under that arrangement.
Tapestry shares experiences from pre-school and accepts contributions from home. Parents can speak to staff at the beginning and end of sessions and discuss progress at planned meetings.
