Stories, rhymes and room to try things independently give Overchurch’s early years provision its character. The nursery belongs to Overchurch Infant School in Upton, Wirral, with learning and care forming part of the school’s early years provision.
Ofsted’s report dated 14 April 2026 judged early years to be at the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than constituting a separate nursery rating.
Adult guidance and independent exploration sit alongside each other. In April 2026, early years staff supported children’s learning while also giving them opportunities to investigate and attempt things for themselves. This helps children build confidence through doing, with an adult available to move their learning forward.
Children’s interests influence the teaching, while activities connect with knowledge they have already gained. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for young children’s learning, development and welfare. Its learning areas cover communication, movement, relationships, reading and writing, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. For parents, that means early education extends beyond practising letters and numbers.
Stories and rhymes provide a concrete example. Children learn them well enough to recall them independently, giving them ideas for their own writing. Early years children also begin phonics, the process of connecting written letters with sounds. The school’s Parents’ Guide to Phonics explains blending through the example of joining the sounds in jam. It gives families a practical way to understand the vocabulary used in early reading.
Relationships support emotional development as well as learning. The April 2026 early years findings describe caring interactions that help children develop a sense of security. Individual development matters: staff respond to children’s interests and adjust their support accordingly.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the school’s 2022 policy sets out an early response to developmental concerns. Parents’ observations are part of that process. Support follows a cycle of assessing needs, agreeing a plan, putting it into practice and reviewing the result, so provision can change as understanding of the child develops.
The school’s SEND offer includes collaboration with families and advice from outside specialists where needed. Its ADHD Friendly School Award work with the ADHD Foundation includes pledges concerning tactile classroom resources, physical activity and calming techniques such as belly breathing. These are school-wide pledges, useful context for discussing an individual nursery child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority under Wirral’s community-school admission arrangements. Families must make a separate application. For Wirral residents, the route is the council’s Parental Preference application at www.wirral.gov.uk/schooladmissions, with a deadline of 15 January.
The scheme covers 2025/26 and subsequent years, subject to review. Applications go through the council rather than directly to the school. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
