A daily vote for the favourite story gives nursery children a small but real say in their learning at Poulton Lancelyn. Books and conversation are central to the provision's character. Nursery and F1 classes cater for children aged 2, 3 and 4 at the school on Venables Drive, Bebington.
In February 2026, Ofsted judged early years to be Strong standard. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than being a separate nursery rating.
Language runs through the early years curriculum, starting with the provision for two-year-olds. Staff develop children's vocabulary through conversation and carefully planned learning. In parent terms, the emphasis is on helping children express themselves, understand stories and build the foundations for reading, writing and number.
Winnie the Witch and Three Billy Goats Gruff are among the stories younger children enjoy retelling. Rhymes and listening to stories build familiarity with books; recounting a favourite gives children a reason to use their growing vocabulary. Adults use interactions throughout the day to develop language, while opportunities to practise writing and number are woven into everyday learning.
Personal, social and emotional development also begins in early years. The nursery's daily story vote makes choosing and participating part of the routine. Early years children have also taken part in plate painting workshops for Chinese New Year, connecting a celebration with a practical creative activity.
Relationships help children settle. In February 2026, the early years findings described children feeling secure emotionally and able to engage with learning. Familiar routines support confidence and growing independence. Staff also build relationships with parents and encourage them to take part in their child's learning, giving home and nursery a shared interest in the child's development.
For children receiving speech and language therapy, parents are asked to give the school their therapist's contact details and arrange for information to be transferred. This helps prevent delays to sessions. Families can arrange a discussion about additional needs through the school office. Health concerns, including allergies or asthma, can be addressed through a Health Care Plan, making care needs part of the planning around the child.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Children already in the nursery room automatically continue into F1, but the move to F2, the school's Reception year, requires a separate application to Wirral Local Authority.
Parents use the Wirral Authority Primary School Application Form, available after 1 September, and submit it by the middle of January. Treat this as a separate step in family planning, even when a child is already settled here.
Before children start Reception, families are invited to a summer-term welcome session with the Foundation Stage team and headteacher. This introduction is separate from the allocation of places.
Morning nursery finishes at 11.45, when lunch begins; afternoon nursery runs from 12.45 to 3.45. The school opens to all children at 8.45. Nursery wraparound opens at 7.45, with afternoon wraparound starting at 3.45 and ending at 5.45. Those earlier and later times matter when matching childcare to a working day.
