Nursery at Raeburn Primary School

A teacher-led preschool day with the option to stay longer gives Little Owls its practical character. Raeburn Primary School’s nursery in Bromborough caters for children aged three to four, with a limit of 30 places in each session. Families can choose a shorter session or combine preschool with Wrappers care.
The distinction matters: teachers lead the term-time preschool provision, while child practitioners lead the additional care. Children can therefore attend for early education alone or spend a longer day here, depending on their family’s needs and the sessions secured.
The core preschool day runs from 9am to 3pm during term time. Morning and afternoon sessions each last three hours, giving families a choice between a shorter stretch and the full preschool day. Wrappers extends the nursery day from 8am until 6pm.
Early number learning includes returning to number bonds, the combinations of numbers that make a total. In February 2023, Ofsted highlighted this repeated practice within the early years. Repetition gives children another opportunity to use learning they have already encountered. The same inspection raised a school-level concern about unfinished curriculum planning in a few subjects, where unclear learning content made it harder for some pupils to connect ideas.
For children using Wrappers, activities include painting, making things with clay, cooking and imaginative play. Children can select activities themselves, with adults supplying materials and organising some options. Outdoor play includes equipment and group games; quieter choices include books or conversation. These are the additional-care activities, distinct from the teacher-led preschool session.
Settling starts with a family visit alongside the child’s allocated key person. Parents can explain their child’s preferences, medical needs, allergies and dietary requirements, and ask questions about care. That gives the adult supporting the child useful personal information before the separation from home. A summer welcome meeting also precedes the autumn start.
Food arrangements depend on the care being used. Before-school and after-school Wrappers sessions include a snack. Holiday Club supplies snacks in both parts of the day, but families send a packed lunch and drink.
The school’s SEND provision includes Little Owls. Its support structure brings together speech and language expertise, learning support and emotional literacy support. Parents take part in SEND review meetings to discuss progress and agree next steps. The school building has wheelchair access and an accessible toilet, concrete considerations for families whose children have mobility needs.
Attending Little Owls does not guarantee a Reception place at Raeburn. Families must make a separate application through Wirral local authority’s normal school admissions process and meet the deadline for their entry year. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Transition preparation has a different purpose. A summer Transition Day lets children meet their next teacher, and children with SEND can receive additional transition preparation where needed. For a child moving into Little Owls or Reception, the SENDCO may visit their existing nursery or join a meeting. These arrangements support familiarity and information sharing; they do not secure admission.
The Little Owls admissions policy, dated March 2023, sets a minimum attendance of six hours each week, with at least three hours on an attending day. Funding entitlement is used in defined session blocks. Families should contact the school for current charges.
An application form places a child on the nursery waiting list. Places depend on availability. Wrappers applications have their own waiting lists, and families may receive only some of the sessions they request initially. Holiday Club operates in most school holidays, including Raeburn INSET days; trips can involve additional charges for transport and entry.
