Sessional provision, a 30-hour option and wraparound care give St John's Pre School several ways to fit into family life. It is managed by St John's Catholic Infant School in Bebington and forms part of the school's Early Years team. That places the preschool within the same organisational team as Foundation Stage 2.
A preschool teacher is listed within the staff team, alongside an EYFS leader and SENCO. At the Ofsted inspection on 28 and 29 November 2023, early years provision was graded Good. This judgement covers the school's early years, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
The Early Years Foundation Stage shapes learning here. In plain parent language, that means developing conversation, movement and relationships alongside early reading, number skills, creativity and understanding the world. These are connected areas of development: learning to communicate and manage feelings matters alongside learning letters and numbers.
The school's grounds include grass and paving, trees and flower beds, plus a garden used for growing vegetables and fruit. These are school facilities, rather than a description of a separate nursery garden. The preschool itself has an additional changing area, while the single-storey school building includes an accessible toilet and wheelchair ramps.
In November 2023, children in the early years were learning to concentrate and take responsibility for their learning. Most achieved well. Activity planning. Some learning tasks did not develop knowledge and skills deeply enough, including in early years. More consistent task design and staff training were required, a useful point for families to weigh alongside the positive judgement.
Before joining preschool, families can attend an open morning, spend time in the classroom and meet staff. A meeting before the child starts also gives parents an opportunity to discuss their needs. This makes the introduction a shared process rather than simply a first session.
Compass carries school communications electronically. Parents register to receive information, so keeping email addresses and telephone details up to date matters. The school also describes daily fruit and access to drinking water for all children. Cool Milk requires registration, including for children under five who receive milk free.
For additional needs, the school's SEND arrangements include Additional Support Plans and termly meetings with parents. A privately employed Speech and Language Therapist supports the school's provision. These give families a structure for discussing targets and reviewing support.
SEND records. In November 2023, some children receiving additional support across the school had not been entered on the SEND register. Families whose child needs support should establish how that support is recorded. The later SEND policy requires children identified for additional SEND support to be registered and monitored.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Under the 2027–2028 admission arrangements, it does not confer oversubscription priority either. Families must apply separately using their home local authority's Common Application Form, with a deadline of 15 January 2027 for September 2027 entry. A Supplementary Information Form and supporting documents also go to the school where applicable under the policy.
Preparation is separate from allocation. Children joining Foundation Stage 2 have an induction day to meet their teacher and teaching assistant. Extra visits can be arranged for children with additional needs; individual transition programmes are also part of the SEND policy.
The preschool offers sessional and 30-hour provision, with wraparound care from 7.30am to 5.45pm on five days each week. The longer care window is a practical consideration for parents balancing work and collection.
Preschool generally uses the front main entrance for drop-off and collection. For enquiries or a visit appointment, contact the school office on 0151 645 5291 or schooloffice@stjohns-infant.wirral.sch.uk.
