Stories, rhymes and the first links between letters and sounds give Dawpool’s nursery a clear early reading focus. Foundation 1 is the school’s pre-school class, part of a Church of England primary school in Thurstaston where provision starts at age three. For parents choosing a first school setting, its identity is distinctly Christian: Dawpool describes patience, kindness and self-control as values embedded in school life.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 20 and 21 May 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Books provide a concrete picture of early learning here. In May 2025, children in early years heard stories and rhymes and responded to them, developing their enjoyment of books. This gives parents something more useful than a broad promise of school readiness: listening and responding are part of the learning children experience.
Letter sounds begin in the Nursery Year through the school’s phonics programme. Children start connecting written letters with the sounds they make, an early step towards reading. Staff had training in phonics teaching, and children needing extra help received support promptly. The emphasis combines enjoyment of stories with the beginnings of understanding how print works.
The wider school setting sits at the foot of Thurstaston Hill. Its grounds include gardens, an Outdoor Classroom and a Secret Garden. These are features of the school environment, rather than a description of a nursery session. On a school tour, they give families concrete spaces to look at alongside Foundation 1.
Behaviour routines start in early years. In May 2025, expectations were established from the beginning of children’s time there, giving the youngest pupils a defined framework for learning together. For a child beginning school life, those routines matter alongside the activities themselves.
Families can contact the school’s SENCo and Inclusion Manager through the school office. This provides a direct route for discussing special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Raise your child’s needs in that conversation so the discussion centres on their individual circumstances.
Attending Foundation 1 does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Use Wirral admissions for the Reception application route, keeping this separate from registering an interest in the nursery with Dawpool.
Eligible parents can access up to 30 hours of free Foundation 1 provision. Eligibility is essential to that offer; it should not be treated as an unconditional entitlement for every family.
Nursery enquiries go directly to the school: telephone 0151 648 3412 or email schooloffice@dawpool.wirral.sch.uk to register interest. Appointments to look around the school can also be arranged through the office. A tour offers a practical next step for families considering Foundation 1.
