Nursery at Townfield Primary School

Rhymes, number practice and play give Townfield’s early years provision its clearest character: children return to ideas through both teaching and practical activity. The nursery takes children aged 3-4 and belongs to Townfield Primary School on Townfield Lane in Prenton, Wirral. It is a school nursery, with nursery applications handled by the school itself.
For families, the useful distinction is between starting nursery and securing a later school place. These are separate decisions and separate applications. Choose the nursery for the experience it offers your child now; attendance does not guarantee admission to Reception.
Learning combines adult teaching with opportunities to practise through play. In April 2023, Ofsted identified early years number learning as an example: children returned to mathematical ideas in taught activities and planned play. That gives children different ways to use the same knowledge, rather than meeting an idea once and moving on. Early years children also enjoyed learning rhymes, bringing spoken language into the picture.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for early years learning. Townfield’s art and design teaching also draws on Development Matters, while computing uses Birth to 5 Matters alongside the EYFS. These are the named guides behind the early years elements of those subjects.
Art includes exploration of materials and ideas, with colour, texture and shape among the concepts revisited across the curriculum. Design and technology uses a cycle of designing, making and evaluating. For a parent, the emphasis is on children trying things, considering what they have made and returning to familiar concepts as their understanding develops.
Settling starts before the agreed nursery hours begin. For September 2026, children had allocated morning or afternoon settling sessions on 3-4 September, followed by the start of agreed hours on 7 September. Those initial sessions were for children only, giving that intake a distinct introductory stage.
Additional needs can be discussed with the class teacher or special educational needs coordinator. Support follows Assess, Plan, Do, Review: staff gather information, agree help with families, put it into practice and review its effect. A medical diagnosis is not required to receive support. In April 2023, identification of additional needs began when children joined in early years, allowing adaptations to learning to start from entry.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or automatically satisfy the school’s admissions criteria. Families must apply separately through Wirral’s Citizen Portal, following the deadline for their child’s entry year. Keep that application distinct from the nursery arrangements, even when your child is already attending Townfield.
Request a nursery application form through the school office or email tpsnursery@remat.org.uk. Nursery admissions are coordinated by Townfield, while school applications go through Wirral.
The nursery day ends at 3.15pm; afternoon playground access begins at 3.10pm. Families collecting more than one child are advised to collect the youngest first. General enquiries can go to townfieldoffice@remat.org.uk or 0151 652 8498.
