Nursery at West Kirby Primary School

Learning school routines starts early here. In March 2023, Ofsted found that children in the early years settled successfully with staff support and developed habits that helped them learn. Those everyday foundations matter when a child is beginning school life.
West Kirby Primary School’s nursery is its Foundation Stage 1 class, known as F1, on Anglesey Road in West Kirby. Provision is for children aged three to four, with places for younger three-year-olds conditional on remaining capacity. This is a nursery within the primary school, with access to the school’s SEND support arrangements.
Routines and early reading give the learning its shape. In March 2023, children began learning to read from the start of the early years. Staff had training to teach the phonics programme, helping children connect sounds with reading. The early years foundation stage (EYFS) curriculum also builds knowledge progressively: learning is organised so children can draw on what they already know as they move forward.
Daily routines supported children’s behaviour as learners. For parents, that places learning to participate alongside learning new content. There is a relevant caution: the same inspection identified occasional weaknesses in how some teachers planned learning across the school, leaving some pupils with less detailed knowledge than intended. That finding was school-wide, rather than a nursery-specific criticism.
Settling into routines was supported by relationships with staff in March 2023. Children with SEND, and those learning English as an additional language, received suitable help in the early years. Support was intended to keep them learning alongside their peers.
Foundation Stage children have their development reviewed each term under the school’s SEND policy. Concerns are discussed with parents and the SEND coordinator, with advice from external agencies sought where appropriate. This gives families a defined part in identifying needs and reviewing support.
The school’s support arrangements include teaching assistants working with small groups or individuals where needed. Wirral Speech and Language Therapy and SENAAT are among its external partners. Parents can contact the SEND coordinator at Sendco@westkirbyprimaryschool.co.uk. For children newly learning English in EYFS, an initial assessment informs support within the classroom, rather than a separate learning programme.
Separate application. An F1 place does not guarantee admission to Reception, called F2 here. Families must apply again through Wirral Local Authority. For entry in September 2027, the deadline is 15 January 2027; applications arriving later are considered after those submitted on time.
Nursery attendance carries no priority in the listed Reception admission criteria. Allocation instead considers care status, catchment, siblings, medical reasons and distance, with separate criteria for children outside the catchment. Familiarity with the school therefore needs to be kept separate from the decision about a Reception place.
The funding model centres on 15 hours each week during term time for three- and four-year-olds. Eligible children turning four in the coming academic year may receive 30-hour places only after that age group’s initial 15-hour offers. Additional paid sessions may be offered to that group with 15-hour places if capacity remains after eligible funded places have been allocated. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery applications go through the School Office: telephone 0151 625 5561 or email schooloffice@westkirby-primary.wirral.sch.uk. Daytime visits can also be arranged through the office, giving families an opportunity to see the school before deciding.
F1 provision is for children aged three to four. Places in the term a child turns three depend on capacity remaining after places for children turning four in the coming academic year have been allocated.
