Nursery at Kinderley Primary School

A dedicated early years area inside the main school, with lunch and playground time alongside older children: Kinderley's nursery takes part in school life from the outset. Children can join from age two, and the provision is led by a teacher, supported by qualified staff. Acorn Class brings Nursery and Reception together.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 30 April and 1 May 2024. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
Play is the starting point for learning here. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children explore and create, with adults helping to develop their learning and social skills. In April and May 2024, den building gave children a chance to try manageable risks. Passing games also became opportunities for conversation, as adults encouraged children to talk to one another. These are useful examples of learning through activity: children practise communicating while taking part in a shared game.
The dedicated indoor area sits within the school itself. For children attending lunchtime, the day extends into the main hall, where early years children eat alongside the rest of the school. Play afterwards takes place on the playground or field. That makes shared school spaces part of their routine, rather than something reserved for a later stage.
Friday afternoons include Celebration Assembly with the wider school. At home, families can use the recommended 50 Things To Do Before You’re Five activities, designed for parents and carers to try and repeat with young children.
Adult interaction supports both learning and relationships. The April and May 2024 early years findings described provision that included children with differing needs, alongside adults who helped children develop socially through play.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), Kinderley uses the Graduated Response approach. Its school policy provides for individual consideration and reasonable adjustments, with parents and other agencies involved where needed. This gives families a basis for discussing support that fits their child, rather than assuming every child needs the same arrangements. Lunchtime brings early years children into the main school hall for their meal.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer priority under the listed admission criteria. Families must make a separate Reception application through Cambridgeshire County Council's School Admissions route.
For the 2026 admissions cycle, the application deadline was 15 January 2026, with offers made on 16 April 2026. Those dates belong to a past cycle.
Sharing Acorn Class with Reception children provides familiarity with the class setting. That everyday connection is separate from the allocation of a school place: choosing the nursery should be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
Funded early learning includes 15 hours a week for all three- and four-year-olds from the term after their third birthday, and for eligible two-year-olds. Eligible three- and four-year-olds can also take up 30-hour funded places. Fee-paying places for two-year-olds who do not qualify for a funded place depend on space being available; contact the school for current charges.
Applications for children below statutory school age require the Council's Parent/Carer declaration form, obtainable through the school office or Early Years Funding team. For enquiries, call 01945 870374 or email office@kinderley.cambs.sch.uk. Visits can be arranged by making an appointment with the office.
