At a Glance

Language and movement give Orchards’ early years provision its clearest character: children talk about their learning, while physical equipment supports those who need help developing movement skills. The nursery belongs to Orchards Church of England Academy on Cherry Road in Wisbech and includes provision for two-year-olds.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following inspection on 19 and 20 November and 11 December 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The academy belongs to the trust now known as Grace Schools, following its September 2026 name change from DEMAT.

The Nursery Day

Conversation has a clear purpose here. In November and December 2024, children were keen to explain their activities and describe what they had learned. Adults helped them take their learning further through their exchanges, with language development receiving substantial attention. For parents, the useful detail is the connection between what children do and how adults help them put it into words.

Physical development also shapes the learning environment. Children needing additional help with physical skills had access to smaller equipment and recently added larger equipment. Resources were chosen in response to children’s needs, giving practical support alongside adult guidance.

The trust describes its curriculum as knowledge-rich, with learning arranged in a deliberate sequence and taught to help children remember it. Its aims include building confidence and social skills. These are trust-wide principles; the concrete early years picture is of children explaining their learning, receiving adult support and using equipment selected for their developmental needs.

Early literacy practice. The same inspection identified a school-wide concern affecting some pupils beginning to read and write: they needed more independent practice before tackling harder tasks. Families should keep that distinction between introducing a skill and giving children time to consolidate it in mind.

Care and Support

Routines begin early. In November and December 2024, expectations were established from children’s first experiences in early years, giving daily participation a consistent structure. Adult help supported children’s learning, while the environment responded to their needs.

For additional needs, the trust describes an ASSESS-PLAN-DO-REVIEW cycle when children require extra or different support. This means assessing a need, planning a response, putting it into practice and reviewing it. The trust identifies the SENDCo and headteacher as parent contacts for SEND, making these roles useful starting points for discussing individual support. This is the trust’s approach, rather than a nursery-specific staffing description.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions; attending nursery should never replace that later application.
