At a Glance

Sensory lights, messy play and physiotherapy share the day in Sunshine Class. Southview’s nursery provision sits within this early-years class at a special school for children with physical and neurological impairments in Witham. Early-years education starts from age three. The emphasis is on helping each child communicate, explore and develop independence through learning adapted to their needs.

Sunshine Class has two classrooms, outdoor space and a soft play area where children can relax, stretch and practise physiotherapy exercises. These are practical parts of the learning environment. Ofsted judged the school’s early-years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 13 and 14 September 2022; this was an early-years judgement within the school inspection.

The Nursery Day

Sand, jelly, water and gloop give children different textures to investigate. Sensory stories bring books into play, while number rhymes and the home corner provide opportunities to explore counting and everyday experiences. Activities work alongside physical and communication programmes, so participation can take different forms for different children.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together early learning about language, movement, relationships, reading, maths, creativity and the world. Sunshine Class adapts this framework for children with visual impairments where needed. Assessment uses developmental levels rather than age expectations, allowing staff to recognise smaller steps and plan the next activity around the child.

Communication begins with useful choices. Makaton starts in the early-years hub with more and stop, within a Total Communication Approach that values whichever method works for the child. Symbols, objects and touch cues can help children express themselves or anticipate an activity. In September 2022, early-years teaching matched sound-learning strategies to individual needs and adjusted targets, helping children progress over time.

Physical access shapes the day too. A sensory garden extends outdoor exploration, and blackout blinds support work with light for children with visual impairments. Children can also use a sensory room, music therapy room and a communications base for individual or small-group activities. Single-level accommodation reduces barriers to moving between these spaces.

Care and Support

Settling begins at home: nursery leads visit new families before children start. Family Link support can continue through this period, while a book travelling between home and school carries parents’ questions and staff comments. That gives the team information it can use during the day.

Individual healthcare plans draw on information from families and professionals and are updated as needs change. Manual handling plans guide movement and positioning. Speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists work alongside the education team, connecting care with access to learning.

Food and drink are also individual. Some Sunshine children receive nutrition through gastrostomy tubes; others practise feeding themselves with adult support. Staff follow each pupil’s feeding guidance. The bathroom adjoining the classroom supports intimate care close to the child’s learning space.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. The local authority decides school placements in consultation with parents and the school. Confirm with the authority what is required for your child’s move to Reception. Southview’s special-school placement criteria include a statement or Education Health Care plan and a primary need involving severe physical difficulty combined with neurological impairment.

Class transition has its own preparation: staff taking over learn each child’s individual approaches and medical needs. This supports continuity of care and learning; it does not determine admission.

Practical Information

Sunshine Class follows the school day, from 9:10am to 3:10pm. Individual timetables vary with children’s needs, so the day is organised around personal programmes as well as class activities.

Uniform is flexible enough to accommodate physical and care needs. Primary options include polo shirts in yellow, white or sky blue, with trousers or jogging pants among the choices. Generic clothing is permitted, and a logo is optional.

For enquiries and discussion of SEND requirements, contact the school office on 01376 503505 or admin@southview.essex.sch.uk. The school is on Conrad Road, Witham, CM8 2TA.
