St Hugh of Lincoln Nursery gives the youngest provision at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School its own name. It sits within a Catholic school on Curbridge Road in Witney, where the school aims to connect learning with faith, moral responsibility and consideration for others.
That school context matters for families choosing a nursery: the school describes partnership with parents and the parish as part of its approach to children’s development. Its ambitions include social, emotional, physical and spiritual growth alongside learning.
Play and planned learning meet in the early years. In May 2023, children were developing secure number understanding, with adults building mathematical practice into their play. A space rocket provided a concrete example: children rehearsed a countdown before pretending to launch. Number work had a purpose within the game.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the starting point for learning. The early-years curriculum identifies knowledge intended to prepare children for later subject learning, rather than treating play and learning as separate activities. Read Write Inc is used across the foundation stage, giving early reading a named programme.
Technology also connects early-years learning with home. Children in EYFS have Tapestry accounts, used for communication between home and school. Computing is incorporated into class topics at this stage, connecting it with other learning.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school aims to identify needs early and adapt learning to the child. Its approach uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review: support is planned, put into practice and reconsidered as the child’s needs develop. Partnership with parents is part of that process.
Support can involve individual work or small groups, depending on need. The school’s provision may draw on a speech and language therapist, an occupational therapist or an educational psychologist to develop targets for a child. These are possible forms of support, rather than a fixed package for every nursery child.
The school also aims to develop independence and everyday skills. For families, the emphasis is on adapting participation and learning to individual needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as two separate steps: choosing this nursery should not be understood as securing the next school place.
The school office is the contact point for enquiries, by email at office@ololwit.org.uk or telephone on 01993702480. The address is Curbridge Road, Witney, OX28 5JZ.
Appointments can be arranged to visit the school when considering an application. A visit offers families a way to discuss their child’s needs before making their choice. For inclusion enquiries, the school also has a dedicated contact address: inclusion@ololwit.org.uk.
