Nursery at Broadmere Primary Academy

An early start within a primary school is the defining feature of Broadmere’s nursery in Sheerwater, Woking. In November 2022, its provision catered for children aged two and three. That places the nursery’s focus on the youngest children, rather than on the school’s wider age range.
At the inspection on 8 and 9 November 2022, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Requires improvement. This judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning needs careful scrutiny here. In November 2022, the early years curriculum did not address every child’s needs, and children’s knowledge and skills were insufficiently developed. The concern extended across learning areas, making the breadth of children’s development a central consideration for families.
Assessment was also inconsistent in early years. Staff could not reliably establish how securely children understood and remembered their learning. That matters because choosing the next activity depends on understanding what a child can already do.
The required action was clear: strengthen early years teaching promptly, with training, continuing guidance and support for staff. For parents considering the nursery, the important distinction is between curriculum intentions and how teaching responds to an individual child’s development.
Family support includes a Wellbeing Lead working across Broadmere and New Monument Primary. The role supports families facing bereavement, separation, illness or other pressures, as well as children who become anxious or unsettled. Support also extends to attendance difficulties and help accessing the Food Bank. This gives family circumstances a place in conversations about a child’s wellbeing.
School catering provides a practical context for meals. Food is prepared on site, and the menu follows a three-week rotation. Each day brings two hot meal choices, including a vegetarian option, alongside filled rolls and jacket potatoes. Bread, salad and dessert are also part of the school meal offer.
Allergy arrangements include an Allergen Aware Menu for gluten, dairy and soya allergies. Allergen Buddies wear purple aprons and hats, while allergen information is displayed at serving points. Packed lunches must exclude sesame seeds and nuts. These are school meal arrangements, rather than a statement of nursery lunch entitlement.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline.
Treat the two decisions separately: choosing nursery provision is a decision about a young child’s care and learning, while securing a Reception place requires its own application. Attendance alone should never be taken as confirmation of a future place.
Broadmere’s address is Devonshire Avenue, Sheerwater, Woking, GU21 5QE. General enquiries can be made on 01932 343747.
For families using the school meal arrangements, switching between packed lunches and school dinners requires written notice two weeks beforehand, by letter or email to the school office. That makes meal changes something to plan ahead rather than decide on the day.
