Nursery at Coworth-Flexlands School

At a Glance

A dedicated nursery playground and woodland give play room to spread beyond the classroom at Coworth-Flexlands. Inside, light-filled classrooms support independent exploration, while specialist teaching in Forest School, Music and Sport adds different ways to learn. This is a nursery with both classroom and outdoor space to use.

The mixed nursery caters for children aged 2½ to 4 at the independent school in Chobham. In January 2026, the early years department included two nursery classes. Its place within the school brings specialist staff into the nursery day, rather than leaving those experiences until children are older.

The Nursery Day

Independent play shapes the approach. Children explore at their own pace in the classrooms, with the nursery playground and woodland extending their opportunities outdoors. Forest School gives that outdoor learning a named place in the programme. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines early learning with personal and physical development: here, conversation, imaginative play and movement provide concrete examples of those strands.

The January 2026 ISI inspection found that early years children progressed well in communication, language and number. Adults encouraged conversation and independence through play, including an imaginary investigation in which children counted footprints. These findings cover early years provision, rather than nursery alone, but show how play can connect speaking, thinking and counting.

Outdoor activity has a practical purpose too. Early years children explored with magnifying boxes, climbed in the playground and practised moving over woodland logs. Cutting, sticking and making models from discarded materials developed smaller hand movements alongside those bigger physical challenges.

Drama and dance involve specialist teachers from nursery onwards, while art begins in EYFS with making marks and exploring colour. Together with Music and Sport, these give children ways to express ideas through movement, sound and making things.

Care and Support

Settling is planned around the child's booking. Children usually have two settling sessions lasting 1.5 hours each. For full-day places, these comprise a morning and an afternoon; morning-only children settle during mornings. Further sessions can be arranged when needed, and the start date is agreed with parents afterwards. That gives the family a staged introduction before the regular timetable begins.

In January 2026, early years staff received ongoing training to support learning. Nursery supervision maintained the required staffing ratios, with children kept where an adult could see or hear them. Sharing was taught through practical routines: sand timers helped children understand whose turn came next, while stories explored kindness and empathy.

Where a child may need learning support, a parent and child meet the Head of Learning Support so the team can confirm it can meet those needs. This makes suitability part of the joining discussion. Lunch is available through the morning-plus-lunch booking, giving families an option between a short morning and a full day.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. The Reception route involves registration through the school's admissions team, and the school recommends registering by age 3. This is a recommendation, rather than an application deadline. Reception applicants have a Stay and Play taster before the offer and acceptance process. Nursery families should confirm with the admissions team what paperwork they must complete for Reception.

Practical Information

Three nursery patterns start at 8.20am: morning-only ends at 11.45am, morning with lunch at 1.00pm, and a full day at 3.30pm. The minimum booking is three mornings each week. Sessions are booked a term ahead, and allocations depend on space and staffing ratios, so flexibility operates within those limits.

Free Early Education can be claimed from the term after a child's third birthday until the first term of their fifth birthday. Nursery charges are shown before the funded entitlement is applied for eligible children. Contact the school for current charges.

Wraparound care runs from 7.30am to 6.00pm, finishing at 5.30pm on Fridays. For nursery children using it, being out of nappies is preferred. A nursery uniform list is available, with Billings & Edmonds supplying school clothing online and through its Eton store. Enquiries and individual tours can be arranged through registrar@coworthflexlands.co.uk.
