Nursery at Kingfield Primary School

At a Glance

Learning to listen, wash hands and resolve small disagreements gives Kingfield’s nursery a practical character: early education includes the skills children need to manage everyday life. This is the nursery at Kingfield Primary School in Woking, serving two-, three- and four-year-olds. Children can join from the term following their second birthday, subject to space. Staffing ratios limit each session to five two-year-olds.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 19 and 20 September 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately graded nursery.

The Nursery Day

Language and independence are central to the nursery’s learning. In September 2023, children’s communication development received strong attention from the start of nursery, helping them become better listeners and preparing them for learning to read. For parents, the emphasis is on foundations: understanding others and developing the ability to communicate.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) work includes learning to look after yourself and get along with other children. Activities and resources supported independence in September 2023; handwashing and toothbrushing were specific examples. Children treated one another kindly and learnt to work through minor disputes themselves. Small routines matter here.

Behaviour is taught explicitly from nursery onwards, giving the youngest children clear expectations to follow. The September 2023 findings also identified weaker development in a few subjects across the school’s curriculum, which begins in nursery. Further refinement of those subjects was required. That concern sits alongside the positive early years findings.

Care and Support

Settling begins with an individual classroom visit alongside the class teacher, in quiet surroundings. Children can then spend time in their new room with a parent or carer before trying it independently. Welcome meetings bring nursery families together with the class teacher, school leadership and Home School Link Worker. Adjustments to this process can reflect a child’s or family’s needs, making the introduction more personal.

Additional needs are considered early. EYFS tracking helps identify children who may benefit from intervention, while the Surrey Graduated Response uses an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle to organise support. Parents can discuss concerns with staff and take part in SEND Support Arrangement meetings. These provide opportunities to agree support and review how it is working.

Physical access includes a disabled toilet and an accessible parking space at the school. Full-day nursery children have lunch in the dining hall, supported by nursery lunchtime staff. Families may choose a paid school meal or send a packed lunch. Innovate supplies school meals; nuts, sesame seeds and foods containing either must stay off the premises.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route. For September 2026 entry, applications went through Surrey County Council, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past.

Class transition takes place during the summer term, when children meet teachers in their next classroom. Some children can have extra meetings and transition work to help them adjust to new adults. This preparation supports familiarity; it does not secure admission.

Practical Information

For the 15-hour entitlement, families can choose five mornings, five afternoons, or a pattern combining full days with a Wednesday half-session. Mornings run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons from noon to 3pm. Full days run from 8.30am to 3pm, with lunch between 11.30am and noon. The combined patterns pair Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon with Thursday and Friday.

Three- and four-year-olds receive 15 funded hours weekly from the term after turning three; eligible children can receive up to 30. Some two-year-olds qualify through Early Learning for 2-year-olds or Working Parent Entitlement. Additional sessions depend on space and are capped at 30 hours per child, using an eligibility code or advance payment. Ask the school for current charges.

Wraparound care. The school’s free breakfast club serves Reception to Year 6, and its before- and after-school care is restricted to those year groups. Families choosing nursery sessions should plan around the nursery’s hours.

Uniform consists of blue tracksuit bottoms, a white polo neck shirt and a school sweatshirt. Return nursery application forms to the school office; enquiries and personal tour bookings can be made on 01483 761885 or at info@kingfield.surrey.sch.uk.
