At a Glance

Play gives language a purpose at Maybury: in June 2023, children in the early years were confidently using vocabulary about serving ice cream in a classroom ice-cream parlour. That small example captures the provision's emphasis on conversation and learning through children's interests.

Duckling Class is the nursery within Maybury Primary School on Walton Road, Woking. At the June 2023 inspection, its age range was two to four, although no two-year-olds were attending then. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding on 27 and 28 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.

The Nursery Day

Sustained play is central to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum here. Children choose learning through accessible resources, while adults also lead activities to introduce knowledge and skills. In practical terms, children have time to revisit what they have learned through play, with adult guidance alongside their own choices.

Birth to Five Matters supports the team's understanding of children's development. Maybury aims to build learning in steps, adapting topics to children's interests and needs rather than giving every topic a fixed duration. Stories and suitable factual books introduce topics where possible. Books therefore provide a starting point for exploring ideas, rather than sitting apart from the rest of the learning.

Language has a clear place in this approach. In June 2023, adults deliberately introduced vocabulary that children then used in imaginative play; the classroom ice-cream parlour made those words useful. Children were absorbed in activities that extended earlier learning. Stories and rhymes were also enjoyed from Nursery onwards, giving young children an early connection with reading.

Nursery children took part in enterprise weeks too. These involved learning about budgeting and undertaking business roles, bringing practical experiences into their understanding of the wider world.

Care and Support

Tapestry gives parents of children in EYFS access to photographs and videos of learning, with space to add comments. This offers a concrete way to connect conversations at home with activities in class. The school's communication arrangements also include termly parent meetings and translation support for families who need it.

Families can contact the Inclusion Leader through the school office. Support includes meetings with other professionals, agreeing targets together and planning transitions with parents. Within the EYFS curriculum, staff check children's starting points, review progress and adjust activities or introduce catch-up sessions. The intention is to respond to individual learning needs early.

Cool Milk provides a daily break-time drink following registration, with free milk for children under five. Preparation for nursery also includes guidance on potty training and tooth brushing, giving families practical topics to work on alongside their child's learning.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Maybury's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing Duckling Class and applying for Reception as separate decisions.

Practical Information

The nursery is based at Maybury Primary School, Walton Road, Woking, GU21 5DW. General enquiries go to the school office on 01483 763272 or info@maybury.surrey.sch.uk; an online enquiry form is another contact route.

The school's illness arrangements require parents to report absence by 9am each day. After sickness or diarrhoea, children should remain away until 48 hours have passed since the last episode. Medication during school hours requires a medical form, available from the office. These routines matter when organising care around a child's attendance.
