A tin of tiger food gives Squirrels Nursery a distinctive introduction to storytelling. Children used The Tiger Who Came to Tea as the starting point for inventing their own stories, turning a familiar book into an invitation to create. That example captures the nursery's combination of adult teaching and children's own ideas.
Squirrels sits within the grounds of Pyrford Church of England Primary School on Coldharbour Road. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 25 and 26 June 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Play and teaching work together here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum combines activities led by adults, learning with other children and play that children direct themselves. In parent terms, children have opportunities both to follow an adult's guidance and to explore an idea of their own. Indoor learning areas and outdoor space both form part of that experience.
Continuous provision is the school's named approach for its younger children: opportunities to explore and practise learning sit alongside direct teaching. Books provide concrete starting points. For the nursery's tiger story activity, children discovered a tin of tiger food, heard The Tiger Who Came to Tea and then made their own versions. The progression gives imaginative play a connection to language and storytelling.
In June 2024, communication, language and children's personal development were priorities within early years. Adults encouraged children to persevere and become more confident, while supporting early writing through help with forming letters and composing ideas. These foundations matter before children can express themselves independently on paper.
Reading also reaches home. Across EYFS, a child is selected each week to take home a Bedtime Book Bag containing a teacher-recommended book, a teddy and a treat. Sharing the story with a family member extends the experience beyond the classroom.
Starting nursery includes a meeting between the teacher, child and parents. For families who use English as an additional language, the conversation includes the child's language at home and experience of English. This gives adults a starting point for understanding how the child communicates, rather than treating every new starter's language experience as the same.
An inclusion team supports children with additional needs and their families across the school. The school aims for children with SEND to participate in activities alongside their peers. For parents, that establishes inclusion as an expectation to discuss around their own child's needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process; joining Squirrels should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
Applications to the school go through Surrey County Council's coordinated admissions scheme, with online applications expected. For September 2026 entry, the closing date was 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed. Keep the Reception application separate from nursery arrangements and follow the deadline for the relevant entry year.
For enquiries, contact the school on 01932 342693 or email info@pyrford.surrey.sch.uk. Squirrels has a nursery application form. The school address is Coldharbour Road, Pyrford, Surrey, GU22 8SP, placing the nursery within the same school grounds as the primary provision.
