Puppets, traditional tales and learning to talk with confidence give Sythwood’s early years its character. Nursery sessions cater for two-year-olds and children aged three and four, within Sythwood Primary and Nursery School in Horsell, Woking. Families can choose shorter sessions for two-year-olds or patterns spread across two and a half days.
The May 2026 Ofsted judgement for early years was Expected standard. That covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately graded nursery. Its emphasis on language and social development makes the learning priorities clear: helping children express themselves, concentrate and build relationships.
Language development shapes the early years curriculum. Staff have identified communication as an area needing attention, so conversations do more than accompany play: they help children learn new words and explain their ideas. The early years foundation stage curriculum meets statutory requirements and responds to children’s learning needs.
Children tackle activities independently and with adults. In May 2026, an example involved making puppets and using them to tell Little Red Riding Hood after exploring traditional stories. This connects practical making with speaking and remembering a story. Children sustained their attention and took an active part in learning.
Staff assess children’s understanding and use gaps in their knowledge to plan subsequent activities. Teaching was generally effective, but adult interactions sometimes missed the opportunity to connect children’s existing understanding with the learning intended. Language support. More precisely focused conversations were an improvement priority in May 2026. For families, this is a useful distinction between plentiful talk and talk that helps a child take the next learning step.
Personal, social and emotional development receives deliberate attention. In May 2026, early years children showed confidence and sociability. Support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities was effective, backed by regular training tailored to staff needs. This gives inclusion a concrete basis in the early years teaching team.
Medical care involves parents directly. Children with significant medical needs have individual healthcare plans developed with their families. Adults must bring medication in its original packaging, labelled for the child, and complete an authorisation form specifying doses and timing. Administration is possible rather than guaranteed, so this arrangement needs to be understood before relying on it.
Lunches are supplied by Cucina IFG, with a changing weekly menu and a salad bar. Parents book meals each day through the Impact Food App. Nursery meals require advance payment unless the child qualifies for free school meals; families can check eligibility with the school office. Keeping the account funded is part of organising a school lunch.
Attending Sythwood’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing nursery sessions and securing a school place as separate decisions.
For two-year-olds, morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, and full days from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Two-and-a-half-day patterns cover Monday and Tuesday plus Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon plus Thursday and Friday. These patterns also apply to three- and four-year-olds.
From the term after a child turns three, the funded entitlement is 15 hours weekly. Some children qualify for 30 funded hours; additional hours may otherwise carry a charge. Ask the school for current charges. A nursery administration officer helps with applications and funding enquiries at nursery@sythwood.surrey.sch.uk or 01483 770063.
