In February 2023, songs, stories and rhymes gave Nursery children their first steps towards reading at St Teresa's Catholic Academy. That early emphasis on books sat alongside opportunities to choose activities and practise independence. The nursery belongs to the Catholic primary academy on Easthampstead Road in Wokingham, rather than operating as a separate setting.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 21 and 22 February 2023. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, covering more than Nursery alone.
Reading begins with listening and enjoyment. In February 2023, songs and rhymes, together with stories, were helping children develop an interest in books from the start of Nursery. For parents, the emphasis was on enjoyment: songs, rhymes and storytelling introduced children to language through activities they could join in with.
Choice also mattered in the early years. During that February visit, children turned discarded materials into handbags, working out how to make their ideas take shape. Adults gave children opportunities to make decisions and do things independently. The example brings the learning into focus: making something involved solving a problem, as well as producing a finished object.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum covers communication, physical skills and social and emotional development, alongside early literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression. This brings learning to talk, move and relate to others alongside exploring ideas and making things. Curriculum overviews include mathematics, physical education and music. The school describes its approach through Gospel values, with curiosity as an aim. These subject areas sit alongside the practical creativity seen in the early years.
Curriculum precision. In February 2023, some foundation subjects needed clearer decisions about which knowledge children should retain, with the improvement action explicitly extending from Nursery onwards. Families should weigh the reading emphasis and opportunities for independence alongside this concern about how learning was organised and checked.
SEND teaching. The February 2023 improvement actions also required better adaptation of teaching in some foundation subjects for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a separate Nursery finding. Its practical importance is the fit between a child's needs and the tasks adults choose, so that support helps them build on earlier learning.
Safeguarding arrangements across the school were effective in February 2023. Staff training supported recognition of concerns, and leaders referred cases promptly to outside agencies when necessary. That provides relevant context for the nursery's place within the school's care arrangements.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at St Teresa's. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for school are distinct decisions: a nursery place should never be treated as an assured place in the next class.
Pre-school enquiries go to admissions@st-teresas.wokingham.sch.uk or 01189784310. There is a Pre-School Application Form, and families are asked to read the admissions information before completing it.
Separate terms and conditions accompany 15-hour and 30-hour funding. These are funding categories, rather than evidence of a particular daily timetable or attendance pattern. For families using funded hours, the applicable conditions belong alongside the nursery application when assessing the arrangement.
