Songs, stories and the first attempts at writing a name give Robin Nursery its character. This is Walter Infant School’s Foundation Stage 1 class in Wokingham, taking children aged three. It sits within the school’s Foundation Stage, with its own Robin classroom and access to the Foundation garden.
Early years provision was graded Outstanding at the Ofsted inspection on 3 and 4 December 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separate nursery inspection. The nursery-specific findings give parents something more concrete than a grade: children developed confidence with pencils and letters, while adults understood the next steps in their learning.
The Robin classroom and Foundation garden provide the starting point for children’s time here. Adult-directed learning sits alongside play chosen by the children, so a session includes both guided practice and opportunities to make their own decisions. Indoor and outdoor play are part of the daily pattern, alongside phonics and teacher-led work on early writing and numbers.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings these experiences together. Its seven areas combine language, movement and emotional development with early reading and writing, mathematics, creative activity and learning about the world. For parents, that means the curriculum reaches beyond pencil work: friendships, communication and physical development are also part of learning.
In December 2024, nursery teaching used songs and storytelling to engage children. Pencil control, letter shapes and name-writing gave them practical ways to build confidence. Adults matched further learning to what individual children could already do, making practice a step towards greater independence.
Participation starts early, too. Nursery children can serve as school councillors, contributing to decisions about playground resources, food and books. That gives even the youngest children a way to influence aspects of school life.
A class teacher works alongside an Early Years Practitioner to support nursery children. Settling begins with time in Robin’s own classroom and the Foundation garden; children join the wider Foundation learning spaces as they become more comfortable. Familiar spaces come first, with opportunities to mix growing gradually.
For families discussing special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school’s Inclusion Manager provides a contact. The SEND Information page also links to Wokingham Local Offer and SENDIASS Service, giving parents routes to further support.
Lunch Club requires a packed lunch supplied by parents. It is an optional, charged addition for children taking morning or afternoon sessions, with limited places. This matters when planning the midday handover: lunch attendance needs arranging separately from the nursery session.
Attending Robin Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Wokingham Borough Council’s School Admissions Section and meet the normal application deadline. Nursery applications are handled by Walter itself, so the two stages require different actions.
Shared learning spaces help with familiarity. As nursery children settle, they can spend time with Reception children in the garden and Reception learning areas. This offers contact with the next stage of school life; it does not secure admission.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am. Afternoon sessions begin at 12.30pm, with collection between 3.20pm and 3.30pm. The 30-hour pattern runs from 8.30am to 2.30pm. These distinct finishes matter when matching nursery attendance to work and collection arrangements.
Lunch Club runs from 11.30am to 12.30pm for children on the 15-hour morning or afternoon patterns. For 30-hour children, the charged Extra Hour Club extends attendance from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Speak to the class teacher or email finance@walter.wokingham.sch.uk about Lunch Club; refer to the school for current charges.
