Nursery at Berrybrook Primary School

A morning rhythm gives Berrybrook's nursery its practical shape: learning starts at 8:30am and finishes at 11:30am, Monday to Friday. The nursery belongs to Berrybrook Primary School on Greenacres Avenue in Wolverhampton. There are 30 morning places, making this a session-based choice for families planning care around a shorter day.
Conversation is a clear teaching focus. At the October 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that language development started with the youngest children, supported by staff training in how to speak with them. Adults used their exchanges with children to extend vocabulary and develop confidence using words. For a young child, that makes talking with staff part of learning itself.
At the October 2022 inspection, the early years foundation stage (EYFS) had planned teaching, with guidance on assessing learning as well as what to teach. This gave the early years team a shared framework for children's learning. In October 2022, subject leaders were still developing their understanding of how their subjects worked in early years, a relevant qualification to the curriculum picture.
A nursery teacher and nursery support staff sit within an early years team led by an EYFS phase leader. That places nursery teaching within a wider early years structure rather than leaving it as an isolated class.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), Berrybrook works with parents, colleagues across Perry Hall Multi-Academy Trust and outside agencies to make learning accessible. Families can raise SEND enquiries through the school office, which provides a route to the school's special educational needs coordinator. Discussing a child's needs is therefore part of a partnership involving school and home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place, and it confers no priority under the oversubscription criteria. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority's online Common Application Form. Berrybrook participates in Wolverhampton's coordinated admissions scheme.
The practical distinction is important: choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions. Submit the Reception application by the deadline for the child's entry year, even when the child already attends Berrybrook's nursery. A nursery place should never be treated as a reserved school place. The Reception application must still go through the normal allocation process alongside other applicants.
The nursery gate opens at 8:30am and closes at 8:40am; collection is at 11:30am throughout the working week. That early finish needs to fit the family's care arrangements.
Nursery places are allocated by the school. Application forms can be obtained through the office or completed online, and all applicants must arrange a visit before applying. The visit is a required step, so build it into the application timetable.
For enquiries and visit arrangements, contact the school office on 01902 921152 or email berrybrookprimary.groupemail@wolverhampton.gov.uk. An online enquiry form also gives families a direct way to make contact.
