At a Glance

A curriculum built around science, technology, engineering and mathematics gives Bushbury’s nursery day its character. STEM learning connects practical exploration with early ideas about how things work, while Terrific for Twos and a SEND resource base give the provision distinct strands.

Bushbury is a maintained nursery school on Bushbury Lane in Wolverhampton, rather than a nursery class within a primary school. Its age range is two to five. Capacity is described as up to 90 nursery places plus up to 30 places for two-year-olds; the admissions page separately identifies 10 part-time resource-base places for children with additional needs. For families, that means choosing a school devoted to the nursery years, with specialist provision alongside its nursery groups.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework. In parent terms, the learning areas bring together language, movement and social development with early literacy, maths, expressive arts and understanding the world. Bushbury adds a named STEM focus: children investigate, ask questions and explore connections between technology, engineering, science and mathematics. British Science Week is an annual feature.

In March 2023, indoor and outdoor workbenches equipped with tools supported practical discovery. Wooden blocks became an imagined route over volcanic lava, with adults prompting children to explain their thinking and try new vocabulary. The point is more than construction: practical play becomes a reason to talk, imagine and test ideas.

In March 2023, inspectors described rhymes across the nursery groups, including Terrific for Twos and the resource provision. Welcome rhymes marked session starts, children enjoyed action rhymes, and music helped them relax during quieter periods. In March 2023, children were also learning to share equipment and dress themselves for wet weather. These small routines give independence a practical place in the day.

Care and Support

Each child joins a family group with a key worker responsible for their needs. In March 2023, children became comfortable with nursery routines quickly, and staff knew individual children well. Parent communication was effective, while reassuring adult responses helped children who needed support with feelings and behaviour. Snack choices also provided opportunities to learn about healthy eating.

SEND support includes enhanced places and a curriculum tailored with families and other professionals. In March 2023, resource-base programmes were personalised, and Makaton signing supported communication across the nursery, including for children who did not use speech. Staff had paediatric first-aid training and worked with health agencies on training for medical and additional needs.

Records and oversight. Ofsted’s inspection on 28 March 2023 found safeguarding effective but required better organisation of children’s records and closer governor checks on policy implementation. The record weaknesses did not place children at risk, but made it harder for leaders to establish promptly which actions had happened. Families should weigh that administrative concern alongside the direct care described above.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 08:45 to 11:45; the afternoon hours are listed as 12:30 to 13:30. The 30-hour pattern runs from 08:45 to 14:45.

For three- and four-year-olds, 15 funded hours begin in the term following the third birthday; eligible working parents can access 30-hour places. Two-year-old provision offers 15 funded hours for working families and families eligible for Terrific for Twos funding, starting in the term after the child turns two.

Use the online application form for a place or waiting-list entry. The office arranges visits and handles enquiries on 01902 558118 or bushburynurseryschool@wolverhampton.gov.uk. A parent or responsible adult must bring and collect children; tell staff and the child beforehand when someone different will collect. Keep emergency contact details current. The front door is locked during the day, so parents and visitors must ring the bell. Close the small gate when coming in or leaving.
