Child-chosen play and a carefully timed introduction to phonics give Corpus Christi’s nursery its character. Children help shape the topics they explore, while Read Write Inc lessons begin in the summer term only when they are ready. This is nursery provision within a Catholic primary academy on Ashmore Avenue in Wolverhampton.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 October 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning directed by adults with activities children choose themselves. In parent language, that means practical exploration and play alongside teaching, with topics adjusted to children’s interests and needs. Children contribute to planning. Their interests can change what happens next.
Indoor and outdoor learning spaces support this approach. Children can choose resources to begin an activity, work together on a problem or explore independently. Adults encourage them to keep going and spend longer developing their ideas. Role play also introduces the adult world, with parents and people from the community contributing to children’s learning.
Read Write Inc brings a specific structure to early reading: children who are ready begin daily lessons lasting 10 minutes in the nursery summer term. Readiness matters here. In October 2023, early years children were learning sounds, enjoying stories and bringing their sound knowledge into play. Staff used questions to extend children’s thinking about their activities and decisions. Language development also helped children express emotions and explain their understanding.
Catholic learning is part of the week, through RE and activities such as worship and church visits. The named RE approach is Learning and Growing as the People of God, giving religious education a defined place alongside play and early reading.
Observation feeds directly into support. Adults watch and listen during play, then use what they learn to adjust activities, either immediately or later. The early years team meets with senior leaders to discuss progress and plan additional learning opportunities or further challenge.
The nursery’s curriculum planning includes children with SEND, those learning English as an additional language and disadvantaged children. For families, this makes adapting learning to individual needs part of the everyday approach. The school also aims for children to understand belonging, respect differences and treat others fairly.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two distinct decisions: taking a nursery place does not remove the need to apply again.
Morning nursery sessions were advertised as free in the 2025 admissions cycle. That is a past offer, rather than confirmation of vacancies for October 2026.
Nursery visits and applications go through the school office. To arrange a visit or enquire about a place, telephone 01902 866 840. This gives families a direct route to meet the provision before deciding whether to apply.
