Nursery at East Park Academy

Ducks, caterpillars and a planned Dudley Zoo trip give East Park Academy’s nursery a concrete introduction to the natural world. Play and exploration sit alongside teaching led by adults, with children also choosing where their interests take them. This is the school’s own nursery on Hollington Road in Wolverhampton, within a primary school whose entry age starts at 3.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning to communicate, move, understand feelings and relationships, and make sense of the world. Here, early maths and creative work sit alongside those foundations. Sessions combine activities directed by staff with learning that children initiate themselves, giving them opportunities both to practise with an adult and to pursue an idea of their own.
Individual development shapes the planning. The nursery organises provision around children’s needs and stages of learning, while the school’s early years approach emphasises exploration, active participation and thinking through problems. Early writing begins with making marks. Read Write Inc is the school’s named phonics approach for early years, connecting sounds with the beginnings of reading.
Animal experiences add something specific to that curriculum. The nursery programme includes observing caterpillars changing form and exploring ducks’ habitats and life cycles. A Dudley Zoo visit is planned around animal variety and conservation. These give children real subjects to observe and discuss. A Nativity performance adds a different kind of participation: making a contribution to a shared production.
In April 2025, Ofsted found that early years learning was shaped by children’s starting points, with attention to posture, holding a pencil and speaking and listening. Those are practical foundations for participating in learning, rather than simply a list of subjects.
Family involvement has a practical form here. Workshops and stay-and-play opportunities invite parents and carers to take part in their child’s learning, giving home and nursery shared experiences to discuss. MyChildAtSchool is used across the school for communication and payments.
Staffing includes a nursery teaching team and an early years lead whose remit covers both Nursery and Reception. For additional needs, the school adapts provision for individual pupils and provides targeted help with foundational skills. Families can contact the SEND co-ordinator through inclusion@eastparkacademy.com to discuss support.
Edwards and Ward supplies the school’s meals, with freshly cooked food and occasional themed menus. This describes the school’s catering arrangement; families choosing a longer nursery day should distinguish that from the funded session itself.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the local authority where they live, using the normal application route and deadline. Choosing nursery here therefore needs to be a decision about the nursery experience itself, with the later school application treated as a separate step.
Morning sessions run Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoons run 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Funded provision includes 15-hour places and, for eligible families, 30-hour places. The latter runs 8:30am to 2:30pm, Monday to Friday. Children on that provision can extend their day to 3:30pm for an additional charge. Ask the school for current charges.
Extra Parkers provides breakfast care from 7:30am to 8:30am and after-school care from 3:30pm to 6:00pm. Wraparound sessions require advance booking through the school’s booking system, so families needing these hours should build booking into their routine.
Tours can be arranged by calling 01902 558899 or emailing info@eastparkacademy.com. Nursery application forms can be collected from the office or downloaded, and a copy of the child’s birth certificate is required. Applications cannot be submitted online or by email.
Light blue nursery jumpers and cardigans with the academy logo are available. A uniform swap rail in the school reception area lets families leave or take useful items, offering a practical way to reuse clothing as children grow.
