Small-group teaching and play chosen by children shape nursery life at Goldthorn Park. Indoor and outdoor learning sit alongside practical work with early reading, writing and maths, giving the sessions a mixture of adult guidance and children's own exploration.
The nursery forms part of Goldthorn Park Primary School on Ward Road in Wolverhampton. Its 56 places are divided between 28 morning and 28 afternoon places. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 March 2022; this judgement covers early years within the school.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In practice here, that means small teaching groups alongside activities children initiate themselves, with opportunities to learn outside as well as indoors. Pre-reading, early writing, fine motor skills and maths are taught through practical activities. Children therefore encounter these skills through doing, as well as through adult instruction.
Stories and themes help connect the learning. A deliberately selected story or topic provides a focus for much of the nursery's work, while the early years environment has resourced learning areas for children to explore. Staff observe children's interests, interactions, achievements and development to help respond to individual needs. The approach gives children's choices a place in the session while keeping attention on what they are learning.
Special events show what this can look like. In July 2025, an EYFS Beach Day brought paddling pools, spades and buckets into school. An EYFS Pancake Day involved mixing ingredients, cooking eggless pancakes over a fire and choosing toppings. Children explored the changes caused by heat: cooking became a practical learning activity, rather than simply a tasting opportunity.
Relationships with families matter to settling. In March 2022, early years children settled readily, enjoyed activities together and benefited from staff's relationships with parents and carers. That is useful reassurance for families considering their child's first experience of a school setting.
Observations across early years include children's skills and interests, so support can respond to the individual child. For families with SEND questions, the school has a SENDCo and a direct contact route through the office. Its support information also signposts Cherry Street SEND and Sensory Hub, including specialist health visitors, SEND stay & play and family support. These are routes to wider help, separate from the nursery's daily activities.
Reception admission is separate. Attending Goldthorn Park Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Wolverhampton City Council, so choosing the nursery should be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
Keep that application distinct from nursery enrolment. Being familiar with the school does not remove the need to apply through the council's Reception route.
Morning Nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; Afternoon Nursery runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Punctual collection and drop-off are required for both sessions, allowing staff time to prepare between groups. These fixed start and finish times are an important part of planning the family day.
