Daily outdoor play and a clear focus on talk give Grove’s nursery its character. This is the nursery provision within Grove Primary Academy on Caledonia Road in Wolverhampton, with morning and afternoon sessions rather than a single nursery timetable. Each session lasts three hours, making the choice of session a practical part of family life.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 May 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school. In May 2024, children settled successfully, developed friendships and practised sharing, giving their first experience of school a social purpose alongside learning.
Play provides the main structure for learning. Children have access to indoor and outdoor activities each day, while adults lead focused tasks and watch how children use their developing skills. This approach, called continuous provision, gives children time to explore and gives staff opportunities to decide what to teach next.
The Early Years Foundation Stage brings together language, physical development, relationships and early subject learning. At Grove, children talk about their activities, listen to stories and explore letter sounds through daily phonics. Communication receives special attention across the curriculum: talking is part of learning, rather than an activity reserved for one lesson.
Physical activities include drawing and cutting alongside climbing, running and bike riding. Number work involves quantities, ordering and measurement; creative activities include dance, music and imaginative play. Nursery topics give these experiences a changing focus, from Weather and Seasons to The Farmyard and People Who Help Us.
Learning Journeys build a picture of each child’s development. Staff use observations and daily assessments to plan subsequent activities, with a further assessment each term. In May 2024, early-years children also used independent activity to revisit recently learned skills, helping them practise beyond an adult-led task.
Settling involves both relationships and routines. Families joining Grove meet senior leadership and pastoral staff, who introduce the school environment and key staff. The nursery aims to make communication comfortable for parents, so concerns can become part of the conversation about a child’s development.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), support can involve the class teacher, teaching assistants, the SEND coordinator or outside professionals. Individual targets are reviewed with families each term, and support may include small-group activities. This gives parents a regular opportunity to discuss progress and changes to their child’s support.
Milk is free for all pupils. Across the school, abm Catering prepares meals in the school kitchen. The nursery’s separate morning and afternoon sessions should remain the basis for planning your child’s day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process; Wolverhampton school admissions is the route for that application. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
Transition preparation has its own purpose. Summer-term transition days help children prepare for their next year group, and a home visit before Reception allows families to discuss their child and ask questions. These activities support familiarity with school life; they do not secure admission.
The morning session runs from 8:30am to 11:30am, and the afternoon session from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. Those distinct collection times matter when arranging work or care for other children. Breakfast Club accepts children from Reception to Year 6, so it is not a nursery option.
