Playing, exploring and following a child's interests give Hill Avenue Academy's nursery its direction. The nursery belongs to the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with morning and afternoon sessions giving families two distinct parts of the day to consider. This is provision within the primary school in Lanesfield, Wolverhampton.
Hill Avenue aims to help its youngest children become independent and curious learners. Its early years approach recognises that children develop at different speeds, so the emphasis is on their individual needs rather than a single pace for everyone.
The Early Years Foundation Stage brings together learning and childhood development. Here, its foundations include communication, physical development and children's social and emotional skills. For parents, that means learning is about talking, moving and relationships as well as early reading and number work.
Literacy and mathematics sit alongside creative expression and learning about the world. Hill Avenue's approach combines exploration through play with active learning and thinking through ideas. The school aims to plan experiences around what interests each child and what they need next. Those interests are intended to shape the learning, rather than simply sit alongside it.
Positive relationships and surroundings that support learning are also central to the approach. The school sees partnership between parents and practitioners as part of children's development, giving home and nursery a shared role in supporting the child's learning.
MyChildAtSchool provides regular communication with families and handles payments. Alongside the app, parents can raise concerns through the school's open-door arrangements or contact staff by email. These give families practical ways to keep a conversation going beyond the nursery session.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school aims to improve access to learning, its environment and written information. Its approach covers communication needs, learning difficulties, emotional and social needs, and physical or sensory needs. The SENCO can be contacted at senco@hillavenueacademy.com.
Across the school, safeguarding training is refreshed annually, and staff and volunteers undergo enhanced DBS checks before starting work. The school also works with catering suppliers on freshly cooked meals, with a balanced diet as its stated aim.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the local authority where they live, following that authority's normal application deadline. Treat this as a fresh application when planning the next stage.
Curriculum planning begins in Nursery and continues through the school. That connection concerns learning; it does not secure admission. Keeping those two questions separate matters when choosing a nursery attached to a school.
Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoon nursery runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. These session boundaries are the practical starting point for planning collection and the rest of the family's day.
