Nursery at Long Knowle Primary School

A three-hour morning and learning spaces indoors and outside give Long Knowle’s nursery its practical shape. Part of Long Knowle Primary School in Wednesfield, it has its own morning timetable and uses the Early Years playground for entry. For families, the central planning fact is an 11:30am finish: this session occupies the morning rather than a full working day.
Learning is planned across indoor and outdoor classrooms. Long Knowle’s early years curriculum uses a named Milestones document to organise expectations and inform plans for each half term, including nursery activities. Those plans build on earlier learning and look ahead to what follows. The practical intention is continuity between activities, rather than a succession of unrelated tasks.
Language gives the learning a clear focus. At the January 2025 inspection, Ofsted described early years children developing their talk through activities including counting ducks at a water tray. This connects number work with conversation: children have something concrete to count and discuss. Stories, singing and rhymes also supported their learning, giving spoken language several different routes into the day.
Outdoor activity has named examples too. A May 2024 early years update described Wild Tribe sessions and an outdoor stage. The update gives a dated example of outdoor activity across the early years. The early years foundation stage here brings together exploration, communication and planned learning; the water-tray example shows how those strands can meet in one activity.
In January 2025, early years children adjusted successfully to school routines and explored their surroundings. That matters for the first weeks: becoming familiar with the setting is part of the learning. A nursery parent’s feedback on the school’s home page also values the opportunity children have to settle in, though this is a parent’s account rather than a description of a fixed settling programme.
For additional needs, families can contact the school’s SEND coordinator. The SEND page also connects parents with the Wolverhampton Local Offer and WIASS, giving them routes to information and advice beyond the classroom.
Safeguarding communication has an important qualification. The school’s policy provides for discussing concerns with parents, while allowing contact with other agencies without advance parental knowledge where protecting a child or an investigation requires it. Families should understand that child welfare can take precedence over prior notification.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Wolverhampton Local Authority handles admissions for Long Knowle, and the school directs place enquiries to its School Admissions team. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The morning session runs from 8:30am to 11:30am. Gates open at 8:25am for drop-off and at 11:25am for collection. Nursery children enter through the Early Years playground; families bringing older siblings are asked to drop them at the main playground first.
The school-wide uniform policy requires uniform throughout the year, including a logo jumper. Other items need not be branded, and a nearly new uniform shop operates in school. For nursery enquiries, contact the office on 01902 558985 or email office@longknowleprimary.co.uk.
