Nursery at Merridale Primary School

A packed lunch, a classroom lunch break and time to practise doing things independently give Merridale’s longer nursery day a practical character. This is the nursery within Merridale Primary School on Aspen Way, Wolverhampton, for children aged three and four. Funded attendance can begin in the term after a child turns three, subject to space.
The nursery has 40 places, divided into 20 morning and 20 afternoon places. Up to eight children can take a full-time, 30-hour place, each using both a morning and an afternoon allocation. Those longer places are therefore part of the nursery’s existing capacity, rather than additional places.
For children attending the longer day, lunch is part of learning to manage themselves. Between 11.30am and 12.15pm, a teaching assistant and midday supervisor oversee lunch in the nursery classroom. Children practise handwashing, eating together and table manners. Everyday routines become opportunities to develop independence and social skills.
Personal, social and emotional development forms part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach: learning about relationships, managing oneself and handling feelings. Seesaw supports home learning in EYFS, giving families a way to continue learning beyond the classroom.
Settling starts with contact between staff, children and parents. Home visits take place towards the end of the summer term and at the start of autumn, alongside a nursery welcome meeting and initial visits. Parents can share their child’s interests, strengths and worries before regular attendance begins. An appointment that cannot be kept must be rearranged; missing the home visit can jeopardise the offer of a place.
Some children need a slower start. Staff discuss this with parents, and an initial period of shorter sessions can be reviewed and gradually extended as the child settles. This also allows for children with additional or more complex needs to receive a different pace of introduction.
Children using the 30-hour provision bring a packed lunch each day. Merridale is nut-free, so lunchboxes must exclude nut products. The supervised classroom lunch keeps care and developing self-care skills together.
A nursery teacher is part of the staffing structure. For additional needs, families can contact the school’s SENCO through the office; support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning with parents, putting help in place and reviewing it. Across the school, wide doorways and rear playground ramps support wheelchair access. These are practical features for families considering access needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority under the September 2027 oversubscription criteria. Families must make a separate application through Wolverhampton Local Authority. Choosing the nursery and applying for school remain distinct decisions.
For September 2027 entry, online applications open in November 2026 and must be submitted by 23:59 on 15 January 2027. Parents can rank up to five schools. Nursery attendance does not replace that application, so families need to plan for the deadline even while their child is already attending Merridale.
The 15-hour pattern is fixed: children attend every weekday morning, from 8.30am to 11.30am, or every weekday afternoon, from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Mixing full days with shorter sessions is not an option for this entitlement.
Eligible families accessing 30 hours attend Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 2.30pm. An optional extension to 3.15pm carries a charge payable in advance; contact the school for current charges. Eligibility must be checked each term and the confirmation code shared with the office.
Nursery application forms come from the school office and can be returned there or to the nursery department. Enquiries can be made on 01902 558760 or at office@merridale.twp.school. Visits to the school can be arranged.
Attendance and collection. Merridale expects at least 96% attendance, and poor attendance can put a nursery place at risk. Collection is by an authorised adult using the agreed password. Families should tell staff immediately if someone different will collect their child.
The nursery caters for three- and four-year-olds. Funded provision can start in the term following the third birthday, if a place is available.
For the 15-hour entitlement, children attend all weekday mornings or all weekday afternoons. A mixed pattern is not offered.
Yes. There are a maximum of eight places for eligible families, running Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 2.30pm. A charged extension to 3.15pm is optional.
Staff discuss a longer transition with parents. Shorter initial sessions can be reviewed and extended as the child becomes more settled.
No. Nursery attendance neither guarantees a place nor gives priority for September 2027 entry. Apply separately through Wolverhampton Local Authority by 23:59 on 15 January 2027.
