Sound walks, sensory play and Forest School give Trinity’s youngest children several ways to explore. Early Explorers caters for two-year-olds, alongside Nursery provision for children aged three and four, within Trinity CofE Primary Academy in Heath Town, Wolverhampton. Early Explorers has 20 places and offers 15 hours each week.
The setting has a Church of England character and welcomes families of every background. It aims to help children become independent, curious and considerate, with play providing the starting point for learning. Ofsted rated the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 3 and 4 July 2023. This is an early years judgement within the school’s inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Learning begins with things children can hear, handle and try. In the provision for two- and three-year-olds, sound walks and listening games introduce phonics by encouraging attention to surrounding sounds. Early Explorers also uses sensory experiences and play to develop communication and independence. The emphasis is on exploring.
Both Early Explorers and Nursery follow the Early Years Foundation Stage, alongside Development Matters. In practical terms, stories, pretend play, songs and hands-on activities support language, beginning literacy, maths and physical development. Social skills are part of this learning too: children practise interacting as they play.
Nursery has a newly designed outdoor learning area, and regular Forest School experiences extend exploration beyond the classroom. Indoor learning spaces support play as well. These give children opportunities to create, investigate and develop confidence through practical activity.
In July 2023, adults in early years explained tasks clearly, demonstrated language and checked understanding; children also shared equipment, waited for turns and listened carefully. There were concerns alongside those strengths: the weakest readers in early years needed more consistent practice and support, while curriculum progression in a few subjects needed strengthening from early years onwards. For parents, the useful focus is how staff build language and revisit learning when a child needs extra help.
Settling into Early Explorers involves working with families and developing familiar relationships. A consistent staff team and predictable routines support children experiencing time away from home, while communication, independence and social interaction are explicit parts of the provision.
Across EYFS, staff collaborate with other professionals around children’s needs. Trinity uses early identification and a graduated approach to SEND support, working with families and external agencies. This gives parents a role in discussing needs and shaping support.
Marvellous Me carries staff messages and updates about school events. Seesaw supports home learning in EYFS, giving families another connection with their child’s learning. Medical conditions and allergies should be shared with staff; medicine needed during the day requires consent forms through the office.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application for Reception through the normal admissions route: a Common Admissions Form, with enquiries handled by the Admissions Team at the Civic Centre. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
Morning drop-off for Nursery runs from 8:30 to 8:45, with collection at 11:30. Its afternoon session runs from 12:30 to 15:15. Early Explorers offers morning sessions from 8:30 to 11:30 and afternoon sessions starting at 12:30, Monday to Friday. Early Explorers has conflicting afternoon finish times of 15:15 and 15:30, so families should confirm collection time with the school office before planning their childcare arrangements.
