Stories, seasonal learning and a forest area give Westacre’s nursery its character. This is nursery provision within Westacre Infant School in Finchfield, Wolverhampton, with a choice of morning and afternoon sessions. For families planning around a shorter nursery day, those two session windows are the practical starting point.
Westacre aims for children to enjoy learning and feel secure and valued. Its values include kindness, perseverance and friendship: ideas that also appear in early years teaching through stories and discussions about behaviour. The emphasis reaches beyond learning letters and numbers to learning how to share a group’s space.
Books introduce topics, while the seasons and the natural world shape the early years curriculum. Topics can run for between two and seven weeks, depending on children’s learning. That gives a subject room to develop rather than requiring every topic to finish on the same timetable.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning about communication, relationships, movement, reading, writing, mathematics, the world and creative expression. At Westacre, children choose some activities themselves and also learn in groups and through adult instruction. Play, investigation and opportunities to practise sit alongside teaching.
Role-play spaces, miniature play scenes and tables for making stories give children reasons to talk and try new vocabulary. Outdoors, the learning garden and forest area extend the setting beyond the classroom, with forest school sessions encouraging children to explore nature and care for their surroundings. A Creative Area lets children select materials for their own artwork.
Nursery phonics begins with Phase 1 activities focused on awareness of sounds. During the summer term, children start Set 1 Sounds within Read Write Inc. This is a staged introduction to early reading. Adventures Above and Beyond the Clouds is a named nursery topic, adding a specific theme to that broader curriculum.
Rules and boundaries are taught through adults demonstrating behaviour and through circle time. Discussions about the school’s values are gathered in a floorbook, giving children a shared record of ideas about how to treat one another.
Westacre works with families and external agencies to support individual children. The Wolverhampton Local Offer brings together services for children with special educational needs or disabilities and their families, providing a wider support route alongside school discussions.
Morning break includes fruit and a choice between water and milk; drinking water is accessible throughout the day. These school arrangements put refreshments into the morning routine. Curriculum updates help parents understand forthcoming learning, giving families a connection between activities at school and conversations at home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the City of Wolverhampton Council’s online admissions portal by the normal admissions deadline. Treat this as a fresh application rather than an automatic move within Westacre.
When applications outnumber places, published oversubscription criteria determine allocation. Familiarity with the school and entitlement to a place are separate matters.
The Morning Session runs from 8:40 a.m. to 11:40 a.m.; the Afternoon Session runs from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Those collection times matter when matching nursery attendance to work or other childcare.
Visits can be arranged through the school office by emailing westacreinfantschool@wolverhampton.gov.uk or calling 01902 558532. Westacre is on Finchfield Hill, WV3 9EP. Parents have permission to use the car parks at Westacre and Chestnut pubs and Lidl. Keep the yellow zig-zag markings clear for children crossing near the gate.
