Nursery at Wodensfield Primary School

Three-hour mornings or afternoons give Wodensfield’s nursery a clear shape: a shorter session within the primary school, with early learning centred on talking, reading and number work. The nursery is part of Wodensfield Primary School in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The staff structure includes a Foundation Stage team, placing nursery provision within the school’s early education organisation.
Talking has a substantial place in children’s learning. In October 2024, adults guided early years activities skilfully and helped children develop their spoken language. Children also had regular chances to practise early reading, writing and mathematics. These are useful foundations for expressing ideas and beginning to understand words and numbers.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework used here. For parents, the clearest examples of its daily application are the routines and activities mirrored by the school’s home resources: Wake Up Shake Up, Pencil Grip and 100 Brilliant Books. They connect movement, handling pencils and sharing books with learning families can support at home.
Phase 1 Phonics and ICAN communication resources also feature in the early years guidance. The nursery curriculum page brings together an EYFS Long Term Plan and class news, giving parents a route into what their child is learning.
Extra help begins with recognising a child’s needs. In October 2024, early years staff identified children needing additional support promptly and used intervention programmes to help them catch up. That gives families a concrete basis for discussing how support will fit their child’s learning.
Across the school, SEND support has universal, targeted and specialist stages. Individual Support Plans are reviewed each half term, with outside expertise including Speech and Language Therapists and Outreach supporting the process. Each classroom has a Regulation Station, where breathing exercises, colouring and fidget toys help children recognise and manage emotions.
Communication includes the school’s open-door policy for parents and carers. Arbor carries messages and allows families to update personal details and arrange parent appointments, providing another way to stay connected with school.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route. Wodensfield’s admissions information directs parents to the City of Wolverhampton Council’s school admissions service.
Information packs go to nursery families in October for children due to start primary school the following September. Treat that as the start of a separate school-choice process: nursery attendance and a Reception allocation are different decisions.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoon nursery runs from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Both are three-hour sessions, so the collection time is an immediate consideration when planning work or other childcare.
The early years information page provides a nursery-place enquiry route, including guidance on applying for a 30-hour place. For nursery enquiries, contact the school office at office@wodensfield.org or telephone 01902 556350.
