Numbers, early reading and learning to take turns give Wood End’s nursery its clearest character. This attached nursery unit caters for 52 three-year-olds at Wood End Primary School in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton. It provides an introduction to school life through early learning and developing social skills.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 February 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery-specific findings were encouraging about number learning, alongside wider early-years concerns about checking learning and planning activities.
A morning session gives the day its shape, with a start window of 8:45am to 8:55am and collection at 11:45am. For families, that means planning around a morning of nursery rather than treating the session as a full working day.
Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), the evidenced learning includes early phonics, number work and social skills. In February 2025, nursery children were developing their understanding of numbers successfully. Across early years, children began phonics promptly, bringing early reading into their introduction to school learning.
Read Write Inc. is the school’s named literacy programme. Its English page also links to Nursery Literacy Targets and Early Years Letter Formation, while the maths page includes Nursery Maths Targets. These give parents specific starting points for understanding the skills being taught. Nursery curriculum overviews and termly information provide another route into the learning programme.
Checking learning. In February 2025, assessment did not consistently catch mistakes in early years, allowing errors in writing letters and numbers to recur. Activity planning also needed attention: some tasks gave children too little opportunity to rehearse previously taught skills. Early-years children were consequently not consistently ready for their next steps. Inspectors required activities that help children secure basic knowledge and skills. For parents, the useful distinction is between introducing a skill and giving a child enough purposeful practice to secure it.
Settling into school life was a positive feature of early years in February 2025. Children were beginning to share and wait for their turn. Those small social steps matter to the nursery experience: learning alongside other children involves more than completing a task.
For families considering special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) support, the school’s SEN page links to the Wolverhampton Local Offer and The Graduated Approach. It also provides guides covering additional needs, specific learning difficulties and autism. These are practical resources for understanding the school’s support processes and local services.
Regular school letters and newsletters keep parents informed about school life. The safeguarding policy also explains that concerns are normally discussed with parents, with exceptions where doing so could create risk or compromise enquiries. Child welfare takes precedence in those circumstances.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The school’s admissions page links families to School Admissions, the Council Appeals Page and the Parents Guide to Admissions. Use the admissions route for the Reception application rather than assuming nursery enrolment completes it.
The nursery’s morning start window is 8:45am to 8:55am, with the session ending at 11:45am. Keep that collection time central to childcare planning.
