Forest School exploration and a strong emphasis on talking give Woodfield’s nursery its character. Part of Woodfield Primary School on Woodfield Avenue in Wolverhampton, it combines morning or afternoon sessions with early learning that gives movement and language deliberate attention.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 6 and 7 February 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school. It is useful context for parents choosing the nursery, rather than a separate nursery inspection outcome.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the starting point for the curriculum. In practical terms, children learn through conversation, creative making and exploration of their surroundings. Forest School gives children across the Foundation Stage opportunities to explore and move, with the school linking this provision to physical development. Outdoor learning has a clear purpose here.
Language receives similar attention. Woodfield places emphasis on developing vocabulary and spoken communication. In February 2024, adults in early years extended learning through focused discussions, drawing on children’s existing understanding. Children sustained attention, persisted with challenges and participated enthusiastically in songs, storytelling and rhymes involving numbers. For parents, these are concrete signs of children practising both communication and the confidence to keep trying.
Creative work includes experimenting with materials and making things inspired by children’s interests. Early years design and technology develops small hand movements and ways of joining materials: practical skills with a visible result. Understanding the World introduces children to their surroundings, while early geography begins with their local area. These activities connect learning to things children can explore and recognise.
In February 2024, early years children shared resources and waited for their turn considerately. Adults supported development from each child’s starting point, giving learning a personal basis rather than treating the group as identical.
The school’s safeguarding arrangements include discussing concerns with parents, subject to exceptions where doing so could increase risk or compromise enquiries. Interpreters can be used when needed. For children attending Woodfield Wicked Wasps Club, breakfast and an afternoon snack form part of the care offered alongside quieter and more active play.
Attending Woodfield’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Wolverhampton residents apply through Wolverhampton City Council’s School Admissions and Transfers Service. Treat that application as a separate family task when planning the move from nursery.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoon nursery runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Woodfield also offers 30 hour provision. The Woodfield Wicked Wasps Club provides nursery wraparound care, giving families another option around their nursery session.
Uniform is required for nursery children, but school badges are optional. Supermarket and high street purchases are accepted, and pre-loved uniform sales take place half termly. This gives families flexibility over where they buy clothing.
