Nursery at Framlingham College

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Sunflower seeds become a conversation about growing plants and feeding birds: a small example of the practical learning that gives Framlingham College’s nursery its character. Children explore ideas through activity, with communication woven into their play.

The nursery caters for ages two to four within the Prep School at Brandeston, where Brandeston Hall stands beside the River Deben. An Early Years building provides a distinct base for the youngest children. In November 2025, there were two nursery classes. This is school-attached provision within an independent school, with its own session choices and daily routines.

The Nursery Day

Language has a clear purpose here. The ISI inspection of 11 to 13 November 2025 found the EYFS curriculum highly effective, with particular strength in developing children’s communication. EYFS means the early years foundation stage: here, learning includes expressing ideas, developing physical skills and practising how to play with others.

Themes give teachers a starting point, while children’s interests help shape activities. Staff check children’s starting points and follow their development, adapting sessions to individual needs. The sunflower example brings this approach into focus: seeds grown and harvested from flowers prompted discussion before being used for bird feeders. A concrete task gives children something meaningful to talk about.

Movement and social learning also have space in the day. Younger children have opportunities for crawling, jumping and play; adults demonstrate how to behave together, helping children practise sharing, listening and waiting their turn. Learning about people such as nurses and police introduces the roles of those who help others.

The routine includes registration at 09:00, a hot lunch at noon in the School Dining Hall, and snack and story time at 15:30. Those familiar points give a session structure alongside the activities.

Care and Support

Settling is planned with parents around the needs of both child and family. The nursery works with families to choose an approach, rather than expecting every child to start in the same way. Before joining, children are invited to spend time in the Early Years building, where a teacher assesses them informally.

Additional help is built into early years teaching for children who need it, using initial assessments and continuing checks to spot where support is needed. Families with specific learning needs should raise them before visits or assessments so suitable arrangements can be made. The Prep School’s allergy arrangements involve parents meeting kitchen staff and Matron, followed by an agreed strategy shared with other staff. That gives dietary needs a practical route into care planning.

In November 2025, safeguarding was effective and explicitly included children in the EYFS. This matters for nursery families as well as those with older pupils.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the Admissions team to confirm the Reception application steps for an existing nursery child. Keep that decision separate from choosing nursery sessions.

For Pre-Prep entry, the process includes a family visit, time in a classroom and informal assessment by the teacher. Registration follows, with a formal offer once suitable references have been obtained. This is an independent-school application process, so choosing the nursery should not be treated as securing the next place.

Practical Information

Eligible three- and four-year-olds can take a 15-hour grant-funded place. Funded mornings run from 09:00 to 12:00; funded afternoons run from 12:50 to 15:50. Children taking both sessions can go home between them for lunch or have lunch at school for an additional charge. Ask the school for current charges.

Wraparound care runs from 08:25 to 17:00. This gives families an option beyond the funded session itself. Enquiries and private visits can be arranged through the Admissions team; the Prep School office can also be contacted at prepschooloffice@framlinghamcollege.co.uk or 01728 685331.
