Imaginative play and the first steps in learning sounds give Rendlesham’s nursery its clearest character. This is nursery provision within Rendlesham Primary School, on Sycamore Drive in Rendlesham, Woodbridge. For families choosing a school nursery, the distinction matters: children’s early learning takes place within the school, while admission to Reception remains a separate decision.
Play is a teaching opportunity here. At the June 2022 inspection, adults in early years joined children’s pretend play skilfully, using questions to extend their thinking. That gives parents a concrete picture of learning through play: an adult participates in the activity and helps a child think further, rather than simply supervising it.
Early sounds are another focus. Nursery children were learning these quickly in June 2022, giving them a starting point for early reading. Play and learning sounds both featured in the findings, so the picture is broader than preparation for formal lessons alone.
Alongside this, the school uses Consortium Trust’s Learning Pi approach to character development. Its themes include creativity, personal development and engagement with the community, linking what children know with the skills and habits they develop. Learning Pi’s Snap and Share feature lets parents and teachers contribute a photograph and comment linked to a learning characteristic. This gives families a practical way to connect learning at home with learning in school.
Arbor is the communication system used across the Trust’s schools and nurseries. Families can receive emails and messages through its parent portal or phone app, bringing school communication into one place. App notifications need to be enabled for alerts to appear; this is a useful practical step for keeping up with messages.
Communication also deserves attention. In June 2022, a small minority of parents across the school wanted better contact between home and school. Leaders were asked to improve how families understood learning and kept track of activities. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a finding confined to nursery.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities, the school aims to work alongside families and professionals and build children’s confidence. That emphasis makes partnership with parents part of its stated approach to inclusion.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. In Suffolk, the route is the local authority’s primary-school application service, which coordinates the normal Reception admissions round.
Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate tasks. Becoming familiar with a school through nursery does not replace the application needed for a place in its Reception year.
