At a Glance

Hand printing, fabric weaving and miniature cities give Ray Lodge’s nursery a practical, creative character. Children explore materials, build with construction kits and talk about what their pictures mean. There is plenty here for small hands to investigate.

The nursery belongs to Ray Lodge Primary School on Snakes Lane East, Woodford Green. Early years education starts from three years old. In February 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning to communicate, manage feelings and develop physical skills with early literacy, mathematics, creative work and understanding the world. Development Matters guides the curriculum milestones. For parents, this means that learning includes how children talk, move and play together, alongside their first steps with words and numbers.

Creative activities have concrete substance. Children use textured paper, threads and fabric for pictures and larger weaving projects. Drawing helps them represent ideas; hand printing introduces colour exploration. They also discuss their artwork, connecting what they have made with feelings and meaning. The school’s specialist Art Classroom adds a physical resource for creative learning, with access extending to all students.

Construction takes an imaginative turn through small worlds made with blocks and kits, including cities with buildings and a park. Joining materials and investigating textures give children opportunities to test how things fit together. Geography begins with recognising different countries and talking about differences seen in photographs or experienced themselves.

In February 2026, early years had an orderly, reassuring atmosphere, with clear routines helping children change activities and remain engaged. Resources supported communication, early maths and social learning. Vocabulary teaching was less consistent: some children could not confidently apply new language. More purposeful conversation and interaction remain an improvement priority.

Care and Support

Relationships provide a reassuring foundation. In February 2026, early years staff understood children’s needs and offered responsive help, including for vulnerable children and those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND). Work with families and outside agencies helped shape that support.

Parents can raise concerns with their child’s teacher or contact the SENDCo or Inclusion Lead directly. The school uses an assess, plan, do and review process, involving parents in decisions and reviewing SEND outcomes termly. Specialist advice can include speech and language therapists and the Early Years Advisory & Support Service, with parental permission required for referrals. This gives families a defined way to discuss concerns and contribute to support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Attendance at Ray Lodge’s nursery does not confer nursery-based priority; the nursery attendance criterion applies specifically to Foundation Nurseries at Farnham Green Primary School.

For September 2027 entry, the application deadline is 15 January 2027. Keep that application separate from nursery arrangements. The school also runs a summer introduction programme for children starting school in September, with a parent meeting to help families prepare for school routines. That preparation supports transition; it does not secure admission.

Practical Information

Morning Nursery runs from 8.40am to 11.45am, Afternoon Nursery from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, and All Day Nursery from 8.45am to 3.30pm. The differing start times matter when organising journeys and collection.

General enquiries go to the school office on 02085047301 or admin@raylodge.org.uk. School tours can be requested by email or telephone, giving families an opportunity to discuss the nursery before choosing it.
