Learning the word taller by wondering whether you can reach the ceiling gives Dorchester’s nursery a concrete point of character: language connected to an idea children can test. This is the school’s own nursery in Worcester Park, with entry from age three. It forms part of a primary school on Dorchester Road, rather than a separate childcare setting.
Vocabulary is part of the learning itself. In February 2023, Ofsted identified support for language development across early years subjects, with nursery children using taller while thinking about reaching the ceiling. The significance for parents is straightforward: mathematical language is being connected to a physical comparison, rather than introduced only as an isolated word.
Dorchester’s curriculum approach links subjects and emphasises practical learning. Children are encouraged to attempt challenges and treat mistakes as a chance to learn. For families, that sets an expectation of trying things out, with learning extending beyond getting an answer right.
The wider school grounds include a trim trail and playgrounds, with a large field also used by the school. Quietopia, its wildlife area, includes habitats children have made for insects and other wildlife. These are features of the school site; they should be considered separately from the nursery’s own session arrangements.
Support for additional needs is coordinated across the school by the SENCo. The role includes identifying needs with teachers, overseeing Individual Support Plans and reviewing progress with families. Links with speech and language therapists, educational psychologists and health professionals provide a route to specialist involvement where required. For a parent, the useful point is having a coordinator who connects classroom adjustments with reviews and external advice.
Parental consent is part of the therapy referral process. When an adult raises a concern, the SENCo considers suitable support; parents then receive a letter explaining the proposed therapy and decide whether to agree. This gives families a decision point before the intervention begins.
Communication also includes a Friday newsletter covering school events and learning across year groups. Paper copies can be requested through the office, giving families another way to receive those updates.
Reception requires a separate application. Attending Dorchester’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery applications go directly to the school, while families must apply again for Reception through Sutton Council’s primary admissions route and meet the deadline for their entry year. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
For nursery applications, request a form from the school office. The admissions contact is admissions@dorchesterprimary.com; general enquiries go to office@dorchesterprimary.com, where the office team directs them to the appropriate person. The telephone number is 020 8330 1144.
A Nursery Induction Evening took place on 3 July 2025. That was a parent preparation event, rather than a nursery session time. For curriculum discussions once a child attends, appointments with their teacher can be arranged through the office.
