Forest Fun and learning through play give Cranberries its early-years character. This is Cranham Primary School’s own nursery in Worcester, within an early-years provision for children aged 3 and up. The nursery has a lead, alongside the school’s EYFS teaching and teaching-assistant teams.
Sharing, safety, respect, achievement and trust shape the early-years curriculum. Cranham aims to develop independence and curiosity, giving children opportunities to explore as well as take part in activities directed by adults.
Play and adult guidance share the learning day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the curriculum framework; here, its practical expression includes learning spaces indoors and outside, activities children choose themselves and experiences organised by staff. Children have room to pursue an interest, while adults introduce learning with a purpose.
Forest Fun and the outdoor classroom bring planned learning outside. These are part of the early-years curriculum, rather than outdoor time being treated solely as a break. Indoor and outdoor play also support physical development: games give children practice in balancing, moving around obstacles and coordinating their bodies.
Smaller movements matter too. The early-years physical curriculum includes puzzles, miniature-world play and creative work, with opportunities to handle tools. Drawing and using paintbrushes or scissors give children practice in controlling their hands. Cranham also builds opportunities for families and children to enjoy reading, and aims to help parents continue learning at home.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning an approach, putting it into practice and reviewing it. Parents contribute to discussions about difficulties, strengths and the next steps. This gives families a role in shaping support.
Visual timetables, smaller learning steps and assistance from teachers or teaching assistants are among Cranham’s adaptations. Specialist advice can also come from speech and language therapists and the Early Year Inclusion Team. These are school-wide support arrangements, with provision adjusted around individual needs.
Family Liaison and Nurture support extend to children and their parents or carers. Families can raise concerns with their child’s teacher first, then involve the SEND coordinator where needed.
Attending Cranberries does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Worcestershire County Council admissions route by the normal deadline. Nursery attendance confers no priority under the 2026/27 admission arrangements, so choosing Cranberries should be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
Transition support is a separate matter. For children who need extra help, the nurture and SEND teams may use classroom visits, social stories or transition booklets. The EYFS lead and SEND coordinator also often visit new Reception starters at home or in their nursery setting. Such preparation helps introduce the change; it does not determine admission.
Families can arrange a tour that includes the nursery by contacting the school office on 01905 452437 or cranhamoffice@riverscofe.co.uk. A visit offers a practical opportunity to see the learning spaces and discuss a child’s needs with the team.
